A mate of mine played a pic6. Friday. He had a few horses in the last leg including the scratching the 5 was declared tote favourite. But there where joint favourites 5. R5.10 win R2.20place the win 8 showed R5.10win R1.80place. Who should be the favourite.

Dividends are rounded off to the nearest decimal ie if a horse is paying R5.13 it is declared at R5.10 so although the dividends reflect as the same they were in all probability paying R5.12 and R5.14 fo example, in this case whichever horse was paying closest to the R5.10 div that was declared is deemed to be the Tote fav...(the place dividend is not taken into account)

I simple terms ....at the time of the screen shot a) places don't count!!
b)insofar as the wins, those figures are rounded down ....whichever of the two has the lower amount, including fractions , is the tote favourite!
That is as I understand it ....on that basis a joint tote favourite is highly unlikely!

Actually ,jokes aside,You and I agree (as would any sensible numerate person) that all pool type bets need to be in one national pool for the financing of the industry!
Where we disagree is how we should achieve that and who /how it should be managed!!

The take out could be (and needs to be )reduced as not all costs are variables and finally they need to up the unit cost of exotics, which is the businesslike way to maintain payouts (instead of removing the protection punters had against insider trading ie. couplings etc)EG when the unit bet was increased to R1 (from 50c) the starting salary in a bank was R200pm...so for 5% of your gross salary you could have 10 lines/tickets.
At todays starting salary you can have 300 lines/tickets (full )or as much as 30,000 lines at a 1% fraction ..........and we wonder why you cant beat the 25% take-out ,overall!
No other industry would survive on 20th century pricing so why do we think racing can?
Sorry but it is irritating, and even more so when I have to see the smug looks of Mutt and Jeff sitting on a Tellytrack couch explaining how clever they are,in spite of the fact that they have no idea of what the real issue is!
Eliminate the open bet, increase the unit price and the take out could be reduced to give tote betting value again!
(it is not too late or too difficult to eliminate the open bet ,but you have to take it out of the hands of the greedy ,arrogant idiots who completely cocked up the litigation- the key lies with the gambling board redefining licencing)

For the last 12 years I have been using a strategy of fractional betting on large perms and relying on recycling and beating the take-out often enough to make modest but consistent profits (and every now and again a extraordinary return)
For the last year there are only 2 tracks it is even worth taking PA's and only 2 or 3 for the Bi-pot!
I believe that unless the take out is reduced and the unit cost is increased (with a limit to the fractional bet ) bigger punters will start to lose interest in both bets!
I would be interested to know what data Saftote keep (other than just total pools),but judging by strategy I would say none.
