Disgusting enough for people to sit and cheer the champion breeders for consecutive years or is the game heartbreaking when people can't make money anymore or when buyers just get gatvol?
The question is rhetorical and requires no reply...

I feel for all horses. Always have , always will.
But...
Our President is now Officially the richest man in SA, with some 50 Billion US $, our economy is stuffed. The leisure Industries will suffer most.
There were no new Owner apps in first 4 months of the Season and a massive exit of existing Owners at same time. Buyer confidence is very low.
So, the Industry has to cut down, reduce numbers. Simple. And we do have a lot of "wishful" matings out there. ...which do not get a bid....

I would rather see humane "culling" than horses being dumped/sold as "pets" to people that may well not be able to afford to feed them or give them proper vet care in 6 months... It sounds cruel and is but rather that than years of suffering

Not sure what you don't understand?
If a mare is barren or produces badly conformed foals what should the breeder do ?
If her offspring have all been poor and it is not financially viable to keep her it's best she is euthanized humanely.
Where do all the horses that are battered and bruised and no longer able to run in Kimberley ? They used to end up at the lion park.
Every decision Mick Goss has to make must be in the best interests of Summerhill. If the farm cannot show a profit then all the other mares might face a similar fate.
I agree though, it is sad.
At the end of the day it is an farm, and this is what happens at farms, especially ones that don't make money.
Johanm has put everything in perspective
As animal lovers it is sad, as business people it is (unfortunately) a fact of any commercial enterprise

Have been posting for ages that the stakeholders in racing seem to be relaxed that the custodians of the stakes ,mismanage the tote so badly
IMO this wasn't a case of IF but one of WHEN!

Last year there was an article in the Racing Post in Britain which said that 40% of Breeders in UK has stopped breeding.
Reason was purely cost.Stud fees,Feed,Vet Fees,Labour Costs etc etc all has to be incurred before any chance of a return.
That's why you see small fields all the time in UK racing.
It has all become to expensive.

In the not so distant future there may only be one big player Jooste:
Owns most of shares in Phumelela and sits on the Board
Owns many expensive horses
Owns a stud farm
Controls the RA
