It really is quite simple - older owners are not being replaced by the younger set. In my day there were many thirty something year owners, masses of 40 somethings, lots of 50's and older. Today I doubt that you will get many 30 somethings and below.
Another issue, as the belts get tightened, first to go are the horses. Ask any yard besides those dominated by the 5 or so major owners what their bad debt situation is. I am told it is shocking. Does anyone have an idea how many registered owners there were in 1990, 2000, 2010 and current? I would bet that there are one fifth of the owners today when compared to 1990.
The current sales prices are easily explained. An oversupply of stock without the normal manipulation by certain cartels

I have a horse in my yard named SARS. My 'training fee' for SARS has just escalated to R2000 PER DAY (Saturdays & Sundays are included).
20 years ago I spent R16k per month on keeping horses and had shares in 14 horses; varying from 20% - 100%.
Today I have 80% in 1 horse and spend about R7k per month. I could not AFFORD more even if I wanted to. Which I don't.
Fact is - you now need to earn a fortune to keep horses. Few do.

If ever you wanted proof that racing in South Africa has been captured, then peruse the result of this sale and observe the widespread absence of certain studs stallions on this catalogue. Observe the absence of buying from a certain sector of the racing community, owners and trainers.
Then watch the moves at the CTS sales this weekend
The Guptas could come take lessons.

OTA you are so correct The Gupta are still appies in training
The catalogue yesterday was weak Not many by top stallions are very few
well performed mares
Many poor legs
Certain big trainers warned off and did not make an appearance
Now to see the manipulation at the CTS sale
Catalogue no better than TBA
Legs no difference
Prices will be inflated for some but there will still be giveaways
The economy is poor Keep of horses has become too high due to the cost of feed
Small breeders ,owners ,trainers ,and jockeys will have to look for other income source

Muhti what was your pick?
I liked a horse out of a mare by Hector Protector
Bought by Glen Puller for R10k
Lots of low prices
Toss a coin and take your chances

Bargains if you have a good eye and patienceBokked wrote: Surely now is the time to become an owner at those prices?
