Then between 8 and 12 depending on trainer Pettigrew R8k Snaith 12k for ex
Surely a trainer can't justify R5 to R6 K a month for a horse not yet in training.
That is crazy.

Dont know how much feed costs for the upkeep for a horse per month so that could come into play as well and therefore a lesser known brand can be used. As I said last week on another thread owning a horse is a luxury not a necessity, so if you can afford to own a horse everyone that is involved with the horses care should get a fair salary, so if it means the training fees going up so be it. Also the horses health should not be compromised with taking shortcuts. As the saying goes "The Sport of Kings".
When have the grooms ever earned a decent salary?

well that might be the case that you "get rich" I hope not because training fees by in large are too low and animals are not being looked after.
I bought 1 horse from Bill Human he was called Ozymandias and he arrived in not such a lekker state.Maybe in those days he should have charged more.
Training is difficult enough without self administered pressure of training below the break even point. For that I will say that when a trainer offers me a deal now I politely move onwards. This is because even if I choose to pay him MORE he will still not be able to add that extra to my horse alone.
Owners are under pressure don't get me wrong but the solution is not cutting training fees or doing deals.
I firmly believe that a trainer cannot look after a horse and or himself if he trains for under R9000 a month.

How's this for keeping a horse. Trainer mentioned you start paying when the horse is nominated to run a race! Lo and behold it ran after 6 months and when it got its first place check the trainer mentioned that we owed him for training fees. Darn NEVER READ the fine print!
Now I watch with interest and gamble with my head!
By the way I have accumulated the training fees that I should have paid and I can say I am better off! What A DAMBELLf!
