Any idea of an 'average' cost for anyone wanting to get involved?

Bokked, it ranges from R8000 to R12 000 a month depending on the yard, have heard some yards charge R6500 to R7500 but i have not raced in those yards. Vitamins, shoes and Vet bills on top of the above amounts and depending on the region there could be nomination costs.

A yearling or a two year old not in training will cost you say R5 to R6 k a month

Then between 8 and 12 depending on trainer Pettigrew R8k Snaith 12k for ex

Bokked, ideally you want to keep a yearling or 2 yr old at a spelling farm and send into full training 4 months before its first run. If in KZN then Ambleway is a good farm.

I owned for several years with a few trainers and never showed a profit. Happy I'm out of owning.

What is the average cost at Ambleway per month?

Surely a trainer can't justify R5 to R6 K a month for a horse not yet in training.

pre-training at certain establishments(not trainers but pre-training farms) is 6.5k per month

Conflicting views on training fees so if the amount is lower than what is being bandied around then someone is getting short-changed, more likely than not it will be the grooms that will take the knock. Dont know how much feed costs for the upkeep for a horse per month so that could come into play as well and therefore a lesser known brand can be used. As I said last week on another thread owning a horse is a luxury not a necessity, so if you can afford to own a horse everyone that is involved with the horses care should get a fair salary, so if it means the training fees going up so be it. Also the horses health should not be compromised with taking shortcuts. As the saying goes "The Sport of Kings".
