Gold Cup mystery man owns up over his antics down
8 years 2 months agoThe intruder seen leading Sizing John back into the winner's enclosure at Cheltenham on Friday has revealed his decades-long campaign of gatecrashing major sporting moments – and says he understands if bosses at the course choose to punish him.
Richard Melia, 56, from Colchester, is a keen gambler and racing fan and has found himself leading in some of the most famous names in the sport, including Frankel, Camelot and Auroras Encore.
Melia, who works as a driver, said his exploits have become a tradition among him and his friends and family since he first started doing it in the late 1990s but admits the response to his latest appearance has been bigger than anything he has experienced before.

Brilliant , reminds me of some bloke who got dressed in the Chelsea kit at the champions league final and even went up and held up the cup.

What about the guy that walked out to bat at the fall of an English wicket(think it was at Lords) made it half way to the pitch before the 'real batsman" walked out. When he was dragged of by security personal, either Geoff Boycott or David Lloyd who were commentating at the time, said" leave him he'll probably do better than this lot "Think he also appeared in an official Man Utd photo where you can see Gary Neville giving him a strange look.

In modern times, no sporting interloper can rival Karl Power, who earned notoriety in the early 2000s with a series of surprise appearances. His first, and most famous, came when he joined Manchester United's line-up for a pre-match team photo in a Champions League quarter-final against Bayern Munich (questioned by Gary Neville, Power responded: "Shut up you grass, Eric Cantona sent me!").
Power also walked out to bat for England against Australia at Headingley, played a warm-up session with a friend's son on Wimbledon Centre Court and performed Riverdance on the podium at Silverstone.
