Unfortunately people like me who has a day job merit ratings and form studying is the only way I can come to my selection unless you watch every race. The merit ratings set by the handicappers might not always be right but goes along way in assisting in selections!!!!

You have a xplora? Than tape away...watching the actual races will assist you even more than and will 'improve' on the MRs and your overall selections. When I started out,I also based all my selection criteria solely on form and merit ratings, its not until recently that I discovered, what is to me,a much better way. To each his own thou. Very hard to find the outsiders using MR and form thou...so its hard tocatch exotics that way, hhence I went searching(and still am searching) for better waysto find wwinnersI might say that is BS and believe that mostly...I would be foolish to say that its totally useless,BT currently I don't use it...To rach His own Naresh. Maybe you form studiers and us dice throwers can combine someday and win that bigger rxotics:)

You don't need to have an explora to tape every race. I can watch it for free even if I'm in bed or out and about. Honestly South African races is least of my wagers. UK and other foreign centres has most of my cash. I am not having ago at you and each one to themselves but if Let It Rain won today it would have been a miracle. Even if you advised your clients to have a small wager, it was going to be loss thus eating into your profit or loss of the day. Seem insignificant but over time it add up.

Naresh, you are correct...it didn't win today and w lost out,but just like you are using LET IT RAIN as an example,I can pull countless of examples of similar fields where my Longshots won...Most being in Novice or Graduation Plates at PE(ofcoz) Most of the time the ratings doesn't hold up...and according the eating into the profits part...you are correct, but that's where something like my MAIN3 bets of the day comes in...and a racecard summary. In truth,by my standards wed had an below average day...but none of my clients are complaining abt LIR who is still coming around the bend lol. There's method to my madness.

4 March...

Kangaroo Jack was a 'shoe in' on ratings:)
Smiling Blue Eyes was waaayyyyy out at the MRs/weights...

And so I can go on and on and on...

And so can form studiers like Yourself and Frodo. But in truth, coz I'm sometimes pigheaded...I won't admit when I'm wrong, especially when it comes to racing. An example would be...If we have a race where let's say 3 runners all have good form...and all running over their best distance...and let's say the pace of the race suits all 3... The draws suits all 3... How do we get the winner than...I go watch past runs...than I'll check weights...and weights are allocated according to MRs... So yes,I do use it here and hrre.,but I'll still maintain its BS.

Remember...the MR of a horse is allocated by people like you and me and as history has shown, more often than not they gt it very wrong!!! VERY WRONG!!!! Now I think its time we find some winners ekse.

Off my head Smiling Blue Eyes is related to Grade 1 winner and sire Russian Sage and also disqualified Grade 2 winner Sage Throne. One of my way of finding longshot winners is through breeding, my posts will verify that. The last race winner today, Glider Path is a half brother to Rabada and the only trainer in recent years to send out a winner over distance in Mirage Drive on debut. Merit ratings should be a tool to add to your selection methods.

The Dubai World Cup today Arrogate was 16 points clear on ratings and proved even in disaster at the start class was too good. In fact all the American runners that ran in the first seven ran almost to their ratings. When used correctly ratings is essential.

On today's run Belle Rose, next week on a line through Wind Chill my assumption is that Oriental Oak should finish almost with her although Belle Rose has a higher merit rating than Oriental Oak and the distance of 1800m might just be a tad sharp for her. Plus Oriental Oak is a half sister to Nightingale winner of the Grade 1 winner Majorca. At almost 5/1 a place it can hurt next week. Merit ratings should be used with conjuction with other methods.
