Trainers beware!

I see that the NHRA are very selective about what, and how, their rules apply. I now see that they have now conveniently withdrawn themselves from getting involved when owners do not pay trainers. Taken from the latest registrations:

97 THE DEFAULTERS' LIST
97.4.4 any monies due by an OWNER to a TRAINER in respect of training fees

So this rule has now been deleted. You have to ask yourself how it can be that the NHRA do not see a non-paying owner as a defaulter. Perhaps it is because they see no money coming into their own coffers if the defaulter settles? Speaking to smaller trainers in particular, non-paying owners are killing the viability of these yards. This is an ill-considered rule change that clearly displays the selfish nature of this incompetent lot

OTA this is exactly what the NHA is all about. Rules for some and different rules for others.

I couldn't agree with you more James. The sooner these incompetents fall under some sort of government jurisdiction the better. They are useless

Financial well being is a basic of regulation in any other walk of life!
Couple up debt with the ability to manipulate the MR system and VOILLA!

Fortunately for racing it's much harder in practice than in theory!

Not that difficult . Sometimes easier than one thinks and not what you know more who you know.
Can not disagree with an one here.
Food for thought . Many years Larry and the RA want to take over the collections . One wants to ask why ?
Not all owners belong to RA . So is there a financial benefit somewhere or a subcontractor whiling to do it first and price ?

Agree ,it shouldn't be difficult ,but the horse has to be right on the day ......that ,judging by results of "money"horses, seems quite hard.

The NHRA has not given a reason for this diabolical move. It has been part of the rules of horse racing for longer than 40 years +. The least that the NHRA can do is give the trainers an explanation. To me, there has not been any change in horseracing that can make the NHRA change this rule.
Possibly the NHRA is signally to Brian Burnard and his new organisation that the NHRA is the boss. I say this because Brian B has been trying his level best to make sure that trainers get paid and owners are kept honest, all for the betterment of the sport. I hope that Brian B will raise this with the NHRA and report the result to owners and trainers.
Trainers are being left vulnerable. It is not fair.

This is actually a conundrum of note. There are so many different angles to look at this depending where you sit.

I believe that the NHA should have the end say being the Police of the Industry.

An example that comes to mind is that in the late 90’s I remember rushing to Newmarket to watch a filly of mine run in a night meeting. When I arrived I noticed the horse had been scratched. On to the phone I phoned my trainer as to what the hell was going on as we had spoken at about 15h00 and it was all systems go. In the end the reason was the horse was scratched because one of the partners in the horse owed one of the big Book Makers and had not settled his account. My filly scratched and those were the rules and we had to accept that an objection to the filly running for whatever reason was granted.

It is not just owners and trainers that are effected.

We know breeders sometimes are not settled , vets battle to collect , it’s a chain reaction if Trainers don’t get paid farriers don’t get paid, transport company’s don’t get paid , feed merchants don’t get paid.

So someone needs to take control and use the laws available both in common law and in Racing Law lets call it.

If owners don’t pay their accounts it can lead to many avenues of manipulation . However someone has to be in charge .

I don’t think there are to many small to medium Trainers out there that have a couple of fair sized owners that are going to squeal on their owner if they have not paid their bills , because that would be like cutting your nose to spite your face.

Therefore that same trainer needs to come up with inventive ways of surviving.

So who are the losers in this ,
1 – the Trainer , Cash Flow problems and all sorts .
2 – The Punter Inconsistant form and all sorts .
3 – The other owners in the stable that are paying their bills but are subsidizing the ones that are not.

Tough One – Don’t think the New Durban Outfit or the RA are the answers here.

Getting a reason from the NHA would be a start.
