One of the sales will have the same trainers attending and mostly doing buy-backs for the same list of owners as the last sale. If this is a reflection of an open market with horses being sold at what the current market prices are then the average person looking to buy a horse needs their head read.

The other sale will see the absence of certain trainers and owners which is quite funny as the same trainers must still believe they are independent......quite a sad situation for SA racing on the whole. Only the bigger stud farms with financial backing have shown back-bone and to those farms, i salute you. South African's in general have a steely resolve and when given the choice will back the "underdog" or less popular view in pursuit of what is fair and principled.

The 2017 National Yearling Sale will well and truly mark the end of a magical era in South African racing history.
This sale will be the last major sale graced by yearlings sired by Mauritzfontein’s late, great sire Fort Wood.

Himself a G1 winning half-brother to3 other G1 winners, the son of Sadler’s Wells more than lived up to expectations when retiring to stud.
Fort Wood, who died in January 2015, was a champion sire, whose progeny included 15 G1 winners. Three of his sons (Horse Chestnut, Celtic Grove and Dynasty) were named Horse Of The Year, with other Fort Wood sired champions include Dog Wood, Elusive Fort, Kimberley Mine, Monyela and Wendywood.

A multiple champion broodmare sire (his daughters have produced such champions as Cherry On The Top and Marinaresco and the last two Cape Guineas winners Noah From Goa and William Longsword), Fort Wood is also a top class sire of sires, with his Dynasty, Elusive Fort and Horse Chestnut all siring G1 winners.

Once again on top of the broodmare sires list this season, Fort Wood has eight yearlings on offer at the National Sale:

Lot 75 –out of a half-sister to a stakes winner, this colt (whose second dam is a G2 winning daughter of Zeditave) hails from the family of champion sprinter Sacred Kingdom

Lot 77 – this colt is a half-brother to Derby winner Cape Speed and closely related to Horse Chestnut

Lot 114 –bred on the reverse cross as G1 winner Noah From Goa, this colt is a ¾ brother to Horse Of The Year and outstanding sire Dynasty

Lot 240 –out of a Cape Cross half-sister to a G3 winning 2yo, this colt is from the family of Arc winner and great sire Vaguely Noble and 2016 Horse Of The Year Minding (also by a son of Sadler’s Wells)

Lot 253 –this colt is out of Oasis Dream’s G2 winning millionaire Welwitschia

Lot 364 –this colt is out of a Dansili ½ sister to G1 winning 2yo and sire Armiger, from the family of multiple international G1 winners Al Kazeem, Diamond Shoal and Glint Of Gold

Lot 411 –this colt is out of a daughter of champion sire Trippi’s G3 winning daughter Franny

Lot 414 –this colt, whose dam is a winning ¾ sister to champion and multiple G1 winner Capetown Noir, is a brother in blood to Dubai classic placed Broodmare Of The Year Akinfeet

Thus the 2017 National Sale provides buyers with a last chance to acquire yearlings by one of the most influential stallions ever to stand at stud in Africa!

The Varsfontein Stud bred Silver Thursday, purchased for R1.3 million by Form Bloodstock at the 2016 National Yearling Sale, was an impressive winner first time out at the Vaal on Thursday.

Trained by Mike de Kock, the filly came with a late rattle to land a juvenile plate over 1200m by two and a half lengths at the expense of the well regarded Australian bred favourite Fish River.
Silver Thursday is owned by Mauritzfontein, Maine Chance Farms and Coolmore’s Mrs John Magnier –and her connections are expected to once again be in attendance at next month’s National Yearling Sale!

A daughter of current leading SA sire Silvano, Silver Thursday, the first winner for Captain Al’s Listed Syringa Handicap winner Secret Obsession, has a Dynasty half-brother (Lot 161) on offer at the 2017 National Yearling Sale.

Silver Thursday’s champion sire Silvano is well represented at the National Yearling Sale, with his 19 strong draft including yearlings out of such well performed mares as Express Queen, Garland, Halfway To Heaven and champion Princess Victoria , as well as siblings to such top class performers as Astro News, Comtesse DuboisDarling Moon, Hot Ticket, and Wavin’ Flag.

The full catalogue for the 2017 National Sale can be viewed online at www.tba.co.za

.....went for a BAR only.....looks like Coolmore bought back most of the imports and even with their interest at this sale prices were still softer for some very good specimens.....can't fathom why there was no big interest in the Speightstown colt that went for a bargain R175K....after letting this go.....they got an agent to chase up bids so that none of the others went for below what it cost to get them here.....

Only saw this now. I wait with anticipation for the debut of the Kittens Joy foal.

On another note Speightstown half bother Irap won at any odds winning the Bluegrass Stakes a Kentucky Derby Trial race while still a maiden about two weeks ago.
