Owners must be really angry with their trainers

R40 000 for tenth and only nine entries?

What's that about !

If you were part of first entries in february it would cost you 45k to get in the race , if you entered in march (2nd entries) would cost 50k or in april 3rd entries would have cost you 55k just to get in....

SUBJECT: Final field for Premier’s Champions Challenge, SA Derby and Computaform Sprint
DATE: Wednesday 26 April 2017
RELEASED BY: Phumelela Gaming and Leisure Ltd

There were no disappointed trainers and owners on Wednesday at the function when the draws were made for three of the four Grade 1 races on Champions Day at Turffontein on Saturday 6 May.
The fields for the R4-million Premier’s Champions Challenge and the R2-million SA Derby over 2450m are small enough so nobody will have to worry about a wide draw while the R1-million Computaform Sprint over 1000m is up the straight where draws matter little.
Only nine runners are carded to go to post for the Champions Challenge and Sean Tarry-trained Legal Eagle looks hard to oppose. With a merit rating of 123 he is the highest rated runner in the country and at the weights has a 3kg advantage over stable companion French Navy.
But sitting in third spot on the “best-handicapped runner list” is four-year-old filly Nother Russia, winner of the HSH Princess Charlene Empress Club Stakes over 1600m at Turffontein last Saturday.
Trainer Mike de Kock may have made a shrewd move running by her as the weights for this event were published before the Empress Club Stakes and are not changed thereafter. As a result the Grade 1 penalty she would have got for winning the race does not apply and she will carry just 55.5kg.
De Kock will also be looking for the third leg of the SA Triple Crown when Heavenly Blue contests the SA Derby. While no horse can claim the R2-million bonus for winning all three legs De Kock has trained Grade 2 Betting World Gauteng Guineas champion Janoobi, while Heavenly Blue won the SA Classic for the yard.
Al Sahem, second in the Guineas and the Classic, will attempt to go one better in the Derby while Pagoda from the Geoff Woodruff yard won the Listed Derby trial over 2000m and is the unknown quantity in the race.
Tarry holds a strong hand in the Computaform Sprint with defending champion Carry On Alice and talented Trip To Heaven.
The balance of the card will be finalised on Tuesday.

Now how many of these will be given a break? and how many and which ones will campaign in the KZN season? This Charity Challenge is tilted in favour of those 'in the know'
