Windsor sack track manager after meeting abandoned

Food for thought

Arena Racing Company has taken strong action in a bid to shore up horsemen's confidence in Windsor by replacing the clerk of the course who on Monday for the second consecutive year officiated over a mid-meeting abandonment brought about by serious safety concerns.

Twelve months on from the Listed Sky Bet Royal Windsor Stakes being lost when racing was halted after three events, one of the highlights in Windsor's calendar was again sacrificed following an inspection of the area where a horse slipped in the evening's second race.

On this occasion racegoers returned home having seen four contests. They will now be offered free admission to a future Windsor meeting, while a number of owners and jockeys are to receive financial compensation.

Now that gentlemen is what is known as ACCOUNTABILITY.

If such drastic measures were implemented here we would see a few heads roll.

I realise that I'm probably in a minority of one here, but I feel sorry for the guy. That bend at Windsor is the sharpest uncambered bend on any UK track and it takes very little to make it slippery. Personally I think Windsor should have ditched flat racing and not jumps racing when they got rid of the latter at the end of 1998.

Unfortunately I've only watched SA racing from thousands of miles away, Dave, so I'm not in a good position to comment, but, yes, it would be interesting to see how one or two of the track managers in your part of the world would cope with the challenges posed by the quirky nature of many of the UK and Irish tracks.

Steck we basically have flat tracks with reasonable weather conditions, nothing quirky, but probably lose more meetings than UK ??

they would pull up a chair, sit down, light up a cigarette, crack open a hansa (if you from Durban as they all drink that girly drink) talk about the rugby and hope that the track fixes itself.
