Sure
I have 1 to 3 in training at most times (if you add the shares)
I have a few mares
Some of the trainers I use are struggling to fit in their latest 2yo's
Many of the horses I have sold don't make their cost price, and one or two that make a profit subsidize the rest.
Many horses that go for decent money are in fact bought back by owners or silent the partners.
Farms that own their own stock and are genuine sellers rarely even keep up with the 'average' that the industry touts as a measure of fantastic health. What has a record price got to do with real earnings?
Seeing as you battling to see the point, let me rephrase. In the UK, the pedigrees are such that it is difficult for a "cheap" horse to actually crack graded racing, while in SA, graded calibre horses can come from anywhere. EG, the Cape Guineas has been won by a Folmar 3 times and a Centenary twice. Graduates from the Cape Sale are recently Pocket Power, Sabina park, Ethnocentric, Alpha Omega etc etc
I can hardly afford horses anymore, so I agree that stakes is the biggest scam in the industry. Turnover rockets compared to 10 years ago, but stakes still the same..effectively only covers a portion of training cost compared. BUT still, over production of horses and in CT there are no empty boxes in the main training centre. You try to send a horse to a CT trainer on the log, ask him where they'll keep it? They are turning horses away.
You keep on saying it's expensive and horses are too expensive and stakes are too low. Explain why the yards are full to capacity, with reserves on the farms? Heard of supply and demand?

I wish the owners all the best in whatever they decide to do.
As far as what I would do if lucky enough to be in such a position - I would retain the Horse - but try an international campaign.
The Horse has won more than enough to finance such an adventure - and imho deserves a 'crack' at the big boys from around the world.
The upside is financially huge - but above the monetary potential, just to see how he'd hold is own against the cream - to me, is what owning such a nice Horse is about.
So all the best to the owners - I'm hoping that you let the JJ Plane 'Fly on'!
Respectfully, Jim.
(ps don't sell for less than $1/2bar US)

I believe in a free market system and as such begrudge no one when it comes to what they do with their horses. They paid for the horse and are obviously entitled to do as they please. My point is simply that it disappointing to me as an avid(now non-racegoer)racing fan to have to watch the exodus of our top horses because the stakes are simply too low to keep them here.I don't mind that they compete on the international stage, but due to our circumstances here they never return.
Our currency is too weak to compete with global prize money anyway,so maybe my stance is naive, but I'm just disappointed that's all.

If Hey makes an offer I say take it..even if the horse makes back its purchase price times two..money is no object for him its the pestige of winning international races and he wants it now..so rather take the money cause its an unusual situation and I personally dont think it will ngo on forever.

What is my argument? I am saying that one should not complain that horses are too expensive to buy, because in this country, more than most others, it is very possible to buy a cheap horse that does well.
Here, it is not just the expensive horses which give you a chance, but here cheap horses very often give you a chance.
Especially as to a very large extent, breeders subsidize many horses, hoping that the occational expensive ones help them average out.

I think most owners are in it for the love of racing (prestige too) however everything has its price and with a horse like JJ you never know how long he will last. The owners have had a fantastic 'ride'- good luck to them whatever their decision.

Hundred percent CORRECT.
Free advice to the JJ Owners (with ALL due respect, because I like this horse very much)--keep him on the grass. Crooked-legged horses break down on sand. Keep him on grass and you will be rewarded. Race him on sand and your heart, among other things, will be broken.

OK here i am.If the goalpost doesnt move again, the horse will be going with de kock, ive been embarresed enough and whatever the team wanna do they must do,i'll just carry on training him for the mercury, and from there i'll hand him over to the de kock yard, and i'll hopefully just enjoy the ride.
Hope that clarifies everything.
Shot.
