A horse with any merit rating can be entered and then declared after every declaration stage. Making the final field is another story.

Not the July but the Epsom Derby....

Investec Derby no-hoper Diore Lia will miss Saturday's Epsom Classic after a BHA ruling prevented apprentice Gina Mangan from riding the 52-Racing Post rated filly in the race, it was revealed on Wednesday night.

Owner-breeder Richard Aylward was informed by the BHA that Mangan was being prevented from taking the ride, and as a result he has decided the filly will not run on Saturday.

Her inclusion in the field has sparked a huge debate within racing as to whether she or her apprentice rider were suitable to take part in the £1.625 million Classic.

Under a subsection of rule 83, the BHA has the power "to refuse to accept any declaration of rider for a horse".

A full explanation for the BHA's decision is expected to be published this evening.

Mangan was in action at Kempton on Wednesday night and picked up a four-day careless riding ban in the apprentice handicap, in which she finished 11th of 14 on Alshan Fajer.

More to follow . . .

That horse was 1000/1 to win the Derby. It had only beaten one horse in two races. And so what? That report sounded like the apprentice cannot ride on Saturday because of the four day ban. I hope the banning wasn't manipulated. The owner was also campaigning a charity drive (for abandoned children I think) using the horse in the Derby. Sad.
