Very true, Dave, unfortunately. UK bookies are generally paranoid about any bets on overseas racing, especially early prices on French racing where their Betfair watchers can't help them until just before the off and the French pool operators such as PMU, Zebet and Genybet also tend to have very little in their pools until the last few minutes.
It's high time that the UK Gambling Commission took a lead from their counterparts in Australia where certain jurisdictions will only grant a bookmaking licence if an operator agrees to lay a minimum amount to all customers and not close or restrict winning accounts. Fat chance!

Oddschecker works out multiples and gives the best odds with the bookies

Steck,regarding the French racing.Do you know any sites that offer form/predictions apart from PMU which has an English version..

Bookies survived for decades by winning more than they lost , now they just want to win!

As a French speaker, Dave, you might find
www.genybet.fr
the most useful for recent form. You can access a horse's last five runs (usually with detailed in-running comments) free of charge and without having an account with them (although you need to have an account to see Genybet's predictions).
