Too many seconds to remember, one that really hurt was Pierre Jourdan. If he had won I would have been set for a good long while.......such is life.
Only backed 1 winner ever of this race.....the mighty Pocket Power (and I had to share the dividend)
Hope this weekend will be my second one!

I'm digressing from Dave's subject. Any from that list above:
- 1911 Nobleman was the only 2yo winner
- There were two Rhodesian/Zimbabwean bred winners
- *1956 Spey Bridge and 2002 Ipi Tombe
- 1960 some left wing SA rugby player, jersey #13, scored the winning try against the All Blacks the same weekend as Left Wing, saddle cloth #13, wins the July (or something like that)
- 1967 Sea Cottage, the shortest priced winning favourite ever, dead heated with the bullet still quarterised in his rump from the year before
- 1975 Gatecrasher was first past the post but lost it in the stewards room as did Surfing Home in 1994 much to the delight of bookies incl Scotia
- 1981 Big Charles wins a few months after the royal wedding of Charles and Diana
- 1982 An auntie forecasts a winning dream with Jamaican Rumba and collects her fortune from Loveday Tattersalls
- 2004 Yard-Arm, the shortest priced favourite ever, doesnt run a drum

Mine as follows;
King Willow (as a 15 year old school boy)
Jollify (dead heat. I think my 2 wins and 2 places paid R50 odd)
Riboville
Lightning Shot
Beau Art
Gondolier ( must have been a great horse considering the trainer)
Flaming Rock
El Picha
Greys Inn
Big City Life
No winners since. I have very small bets but this year I am going all out and have taken 2 mega bets(for me) R20ew on Krambambuli and R20 places on Horizon.

Trademark (Striker!) - what a ride from the master!
Dynasty - what a champion, best July win from that draw - followed Dynasty from the time he first won in Greyville over a mile first time out. shortest favourite I have seen in the July, shortened to 12/10 at one stage!
haven't had a winner since, but to be honest hardly back a July horse on the nose anymore as its just too open these days, play the quartet rather but haven't picked up a quartet in the last few years either!

There is only one truth.
My first July punt was when Gondolier ran second in 1983. I have had a punt every July since. I have even been to the July on a few occasions. I have not had a winning punt on the July ever!!

Actually an interesting exercise for me. Realized how few winners and how many near misses at big prices. Eish.
2014 - still smarting from Run for it, and went all in on Wylie Hall. My posts here bear testament to that. Kept on taking the 40s and 50's where ever I could. Was a szeable six figure sum to come that I had spread over three bookies. Then piled in trifectas and quartets, some banker Wylie and some roving. That was the consolation. As they went past the post I told my mate we had lost it. Still had to wait and go through the objections etc. no good for the heart. haven't recovered fully even to this day
2013 - the first of two huge dissapointments. Started changing my prep and looked for value. Took the 66s on Run for it after the gelding based on its previous form and before it had the Durban prep. and continued to back it all the way in. Got great each way... but
2011 Igugu. Not much in this one because of the price.
2008 Pocket Power/Dancers Daughter - was all over Dancers like a rash. Dead heat took the shine off a little but I was on-course and thought she didn't get up.
2004 Greys Inn - could not see it getting beat. Mix of confident form study and belief of omen. Family friends of long-standing owned the Greys Inn in Bulawayo for years. Spent many years growing up in and out of at establishment, and we went up and stayed with them That year. Pure karma.
2002 Ipi Tombe - never mind El Picha this felt like El Niño for the longest drought between winners. One of my most confident selections that never went tits up.
1996 London News. Theoretically this counts. In my short-lived wisdom decided to give up punting a month before the July. But proceeded to tip it to all and sundry, as did most.. Then cheered it home and started punting again after the fact. What a dick!
1994 More heartache. This is a common theme so go get the tissues. Salaries went on Pas de Quoi. Still haven't got over what Surfing Home did. Hope I got the years right here.
1992 Spanish Galliard - finally after a long wait. Rockin' Robbie Sham you biscuit.
1991 My laaitie was born. Fourth of July. Went against studying form and Backed the two USA horses Al Mufti and Rakeen (if my memory serves me correctly?) and ended up with swingers.
1986 Did my boots on Fools Holme. Thought it could not be beat.
1985 Gondolier - first July winner and was always a special one for me. No disrespect to Pat Antelme, but imagine how good this horse actually was...
