If one horse shortens, others must drift. There lies the value after that if the bookie manipulates the price to shorten as you are getting a better value on other runners except the manipulated runner. If the bookie seemingly drifts another horse so nobody wages a bet then on it, the bookmaker can still be caught by astute punters on the drifted runner.

You definitely right there Naresh as Asian Star drifted from 22-10 out to 37-10 and the winner,Bad Attitude, went from 6-1 out to 13-1.So it all points to proper money being wagered on Drageda. The stable seemingly didn't like it but I think it would take quite a bit of money to move a horse from 10-1 into 17-20.Just wondering who backed it and where they got their information from because if the stable are not confident I just don't see how someone could put so much money on a horse.

One of the definition of a coup is to achieve something difficult....
Most coups are unsuccessful

All coups are successful, otherwise they are attempted coups...like suicide, it's a thing.

An analysis of the tote betting market reveals numerous betting splurges throughout any given day that are not successful. There are many mythical permutations at identifying these moves - and there are horses that can see action of R150,000 to R180,000 that don't win. In some races there are two runners moving in excess of R100,000 bet on each and sometimes both lose. Betting action is meaningless unless you have already assessed a given race, have a set expectation of how it will pan out and who the contenders are and can identify discreet support on the horse.
Any person informed or uninformed placing a large amount of money on a single horse in a single race, is not rational enough to be followed.

Squire, you get failed coups, whether in a betting sense or trying to over-throw a Government, etc.
Guessing has never been widely acclaimed as a good gambling strategy.
