40/1 which was the correct price in the shop at the time

I've had a similar unpleasant experience before and even took the matter to the Bookmakers Association to no joy. They have primarily the bookmakers interest at heart. If you have a ticket in hand that states 40/1 and the bet was laid and confirmed then that's what you should be paid. On the official TABGOLD site if you look under run-ons for the days racing the official opening price was 20/1 SP 7/1.
