I don't know if it is a modern trend but jocks seem to give up a lot easier on a horse these days just an observation

Gavin Lerena got a 7 day suspension for "failing to ride ILHA DA VAR out to the end of the race to the satisfaction of the Stipendiary Stewards, thereby prejudicing his chances of obtaining the outright fourth place, instead of dead-heating for this position, in Race 3 run at the Turffontein Racecourse on 19 September 2017".
It would be beneficial to all concerned if this rule was consistently applied at all centers.

I am one who firmly believes that if the horse has no chance of winning or placing then why push the horse. Yes a horse needs a good blow to get the feel of racing as a youngster but dont push it to the limit. Jockeys also waste a lot of energy on a lost cause and horses likewise. So imho the jocks dont give in, they are being kind to the horse.

I agree fully. It's almost as if the jock is saying , " I am not going to earn here so stuff this and everyone involved" and then he just bobs away over the last 200m until the finish.... It's very easy and convenient afterwards to then "feel sorry" for the horse. Yeah right....(obviously I am talking about horses which have no issues)
But this is a very bad reflection on true form and ability. It actually sticks Punters away. A tiring horse which is beaten may finish 5 or 6 lengths off if ridden to the line. ( Not beaten up, no stick - just a jock riding the horse to the line) But, same horse will stop to nothing if jock straightens his legs and stops assisting the horse. It will now finish 10 or 12 lengths behind. This is a significant form swing, come next time out...
Maybe this also answers some questions as to which jocks I prefer to use regularly. I am stuffed, the minute my riders start putting their hands down. I don't know exactly where my horse should really have run. So, even if my horse improves by a few lengths or by about 3kg's at home....I cannot be sure next time......because, did I really run 8 lengths behind or could I have run 5 lengths behind...? Watch the jocks that I use - they know the story in my yard - ride to the line!
Years ago, one of the legendary chief stipes saw a jock put his hands down before the line albeit that he was always going to miss the placings. He called the jock in and said " Mr.Jock, you have two riding styles. The one which produces you winners and the one that I have just seen. From now on, I only want to see the winner producing style. This one of today I do not want to see again, unless you need a holiday. Thank You. You may leave now. Have a good day."
