I know its the wrong topic but... :P :P :P
The chronic horse player paused before taking his place at the betting windows, and offered up a fervent prayer to his Maker. "Blessed Lord," he muttered with intense sincerity, "I know you don't approve of my gambling, but this once, Lord, just this once, please let me break even. I need the money so badly."

Bokked wrote: There are no best bookmakers. If you can, use a Betting Exchange (Betdaq, Betfair, Smarkets, etc.)

Otherwise limit yourself to one or two big punts and do them in cash. Go into a branch, bet so that the total of your winnings + your stake is under R25,000 (otherwise you have to FICA & you are no longer anonymous). Do this with multiple betting slips, branches and bookmakers. It's the only way that you can win.

Having an online account is suicide. It stacks the odds into the bookmakers favour incredibly. That is why over the past 15 years there has been an explosion of online bookmakers worldwide. You cannot win with an online account because:

- easier access means more bets and more ways the bookmakers overround kills you
- easier access means more stupid & on a whim betting
- when you lose they let you lose
- when you win they limit you very quickly (or ban you)
- they have so much data on you that there is no way that you can win. They will just limit your winning avenues and guide you down loss making paths

In almost 40 years of gambling the only way I have made money is to wait for a good bet, bet big and keep my anonymity by betting in cash under the radar

I defy anyone on here (that isn't a bookmakers mole account) to say that they make money with an online account.
If, however, your modus operandi is to bet R10 and have fun. Then any bookie will do

I think you can make money online for as long as they let you..
But it's the time they let you what is the problem.Im not exaggerating, but I reckon I've had 150+ online accounts in different names and it's getting harder and harder to have a winning account stay open.

Only if you are successful then beware of the exchanges. Betfair will invoice you a fee once a year (think) if you are seen as "professional" with sustained successful bets.

Dave, one thing which might prolong the life of a winning account (although it won't do so indefinitely) is to make sure that there is no bookmaker spyware on your PC, in particular 'iesnare' (also known as 'mpsnare' and 'iovation'). By no means all UK-licensed bookmakers use it, but there are plenty that do (I don't want to cause Bob and Dave any potential grief by naming and shaming on here), but the Ghostery browser extension detects and, if you ask it to, blocks it. One possible problem, however, is that a bookmaker who sees that they can no longer monitor your betting activity (e.g. looking at exchanges before placing a bet with them) might close or restrict your account on the spot.

No thing like the best bookmaker.

Back in the eighties i worked as a runner in the ROODEPOORT TATTERSALS.
The bookies paid us good money to try and get every possible bet. Competition was stiff between runners and various bookmakers.

TODAY..each bookie operates from his own premises..gone is the days when you could go to the bookie next door if you were looking for a better price..

And to bet at a off course tote is worse.. no service..the operators dont know who is running..who trains the horse..no interest..only trained to work a computer...what they punch in you get..no questions ..the price could be 33/10 on the screen behind them and your printout will reflect differently..and worse if it is a overseas bet

on line betting no better.. bring back the competition..
