Hows this for an idea
7 years 7 months ago
So in the studio on Wednesday and off air the following topic comes up.
" one of the producers to his kids racing and they asked why such a long time between races"
I know we have 20/20 in KZN but why stop there
Can someone really explain why we cannot have 12 races 10 minutes apart. 2 hours in and out done and dusted. The rest of the day free. The youth don't want to be somewhere for 4-5 hours.
If i look at my beloved NFL even though its a long session its non stop entertainment

I discussed this with a trainer friend a while back - 6 races in an hour 12 horses per race - 1000m straight - p6 in an hour - jocks one race workriders next race - handicap - maiden - hcp- maiden etc so workriders can ride set weights - Racing needs to move away from the days of bow-ties and brollies and join the quick-fix world before it becomes an also-ran!

Virtually impossible to achieve, unless jockeys dont ride in successive races (weighing in out, discussions with trainers, change of colours etc etc etc) Horse boxes will be full getting in each others way, re saddling etc etc. Just not feasible at all. Pundits on TV will be in a spin

I think its a brilliant idea if your views are that racing should be all about the show. I would hazard a guess that the tote turnover will drop because of the lack of time between races, and a drop in turnover will not be well received because racing is not about the show, its about the dough.

We make too much of the time between races because our thinking is stuck in the traditional racing space. I agree with OTA, forget about the show except for the big occasions where the sport is showcased and given some prestigious annual airtime and some glamour space.
Marketing racing to a modern market should be the easiest thing in the world because actual races take up so little time which leaves a lot of room for other things deemed to be of more importance.
If the format is right it will be entertaining, rewarding and affordable and worth a flip on the mobile to stay up to date with how it is unfolding.
It is difficult to see the opportunities when you are stuck in a time warp and under pressure to perform. Racing opportunities abound when you draw a line through the current product portfolio and think about the long term growth prospects from an unconventional market.
Good luck in plodding along if change is continuously resisted.

While the horses are loading into the starting gates the other jockeys for the next race should be preparing to mount their horses who have completed parading. We need female managers because they can multitask the parade and the starting gates.

It wouldnt work, as this really doesnt leave enough time for the masses of oncourse patrons to get through the sardine like queues at the food and drink stations aswell as the tote terminals...
