Five horses were galloped from 2200m mark on the Classic track at the Vaal on Tuesday and the jockeys who participated in the trial were positive afterward.

The Vaal Classic track will reopen on Tuesday next week after nearly a year.

The jockeys were Gunter Wrogemann, Donovan Mansour, Callan Murray, Mathew Thackeray and Hennie Greyling, who rode horses from the Johan Janse van Vuuren, Gokhan Terzi and Claude Walker stables.

Wrogemann was enthusiastic about the experience, telling Phumelela’s Darren McEwan it must now be one of the best tracks in South Africa.

Murray compared it favourably with the new Durbanville surface and the other three riders were also happy with the track.

This makes me laugh. The idiots laid a new track with a clay base and after a year of having to sort out the cock up they now congratulating themselves on a job well done.

I am happy that the classic track is back. It benefits the horses as they do not have to run so often on over-raced or poor quality ground. Just remember that another turf track does not translate into more racing meetings and races. If anything, punters and owners remain the losers as the present 8 race programme for weekday meetings will not revert back to the 9 race programme which was the order of the day since time immemorial.
