The National Horseracing Authority confirms that at an Inquiry held in Johannesburg on Friday 24 November 2017, Trainer Mr Mike de Kock was charged with a contravention of Rule 73.2.4 in that he was the trainer of the horse JANOOBI from which a specimen was taken, after it had participated in and won the 7th race run at the Greyville Racecourse on 7 May 2017, disclosed upon analysis the presence of Dexamethasone, a prohibited substance in terms of the Rules of The National Horseracing Authority.

From the SP

Quote from Robert Bloomberg as legal representative for trainer Mike De Kock:
“The Press Release is unfortunately very selective in its wording and does not fairly portray certain very salient and important facts. Horse Racing

Following representations made by us which included full disclosure of all veterinary and related records pertaining to the horse Janoobi, and following agreement reached thereafter, it was agreed by both parties to conduct the Inquiry in absentia.

Mike acknowledged guilt ONLY as the responsible trainer in terms of the strict liability rule, but NOT to any administration, prior knowledge or condonation thereof, nor was Mike present in the lead-up to the race in question.

Mike’s horses have been tested in around 10 different racing jurisdictions worldwide and his reputation and integrity is untarnished and of paramount importance to him”

As i understand it, this is not a performance enhancing drug, but it is an anti-inflammatory. Being that it was still traced in the animal on race day, it could have been administered anywhere up to two days before the race.

The only issue here would be racing a horse with inflammation and injury , under the reliance of a drug - much like getting high so you don't feel any pain.

I trust a stable of this reputation would never subject a horse to such a cruel endeavor, and that this may have just been an error in the normal medication of the horse - someone just didn't remember to stop the meds at least three days before the race.

if my memory serves me well, then years ago when mr de kock was in his prime and winning every graded race in south africa i read an article in the cape argus in which mr de kock was found guilty of illegal substances in horses which he trained.this was around the time of horse chestnut and mr de kock vehemently denied the charges, but he was found guilty and was fined and if i remember correctly it was the 3rd time he got caught and part of his sentence was if he was found guilty again he would be warned off for life.

well since those days and his many incredible exploits around the world he has never been found guilty again until now,so what happens or has everyone forgotten the sentence dished up to him all those years ago.I was young back then and crazy about the game and i am positive about what i read in the paper and i don't easily forget,so if anyone knows if my memory is failing me or if i got my facts wrong please correct me or tell me i am wrong.

There is nothing wrong with your memory winzip - de Kock was actually warned off and had to go to the Supreme court to get it overturned. As for this statement by Bloomberg about reputation and integrity untarnished, what a bunch of poppycock.

Trainer fined R60 000
SPORT / 21 FEBRUARY 2000, 10:37PM /

Trainer Mike de Kock had been fined R60 000 after being found guilty for prohibited substances having been found in the urine samples of Spook Express and Drum Star at Clairwood on July 25, 1998, the Jockey Club of Southern Africa announced on Monday.

Both horses were disqualified from the eighth race after the analyses revealed the presence of a banned substance which was administered by a veterinary surgeon a week before the race.

The veterinarian thought the substance would have been out of the horses the day before the race, according to evidence led at the hearing last week. De Kock acknowledged his responsibility as the trainer at the time the horses were raced. The inquiry board treated the two cases as one for the purpose of penalty.

De Kock appealed against the severity of the penalty, which was dismissed by the appeal board.

Who was pacemaker and stable companion in the Derby Horse Chestnut won? The horse ran last but his rider was ecstatic when Horse Chestnut past the post the winner. He was the most elated jockey ever to have run last! Anyway, that horse subsequently went on to win a PE feature and was later found to have run with questionable medicine. Big sh*t followed with another de Kock in the Jockey Club. Ill look for his name in my Horse Chestnut book.

The video is too long to post as it is a documentary on Youtube on Horse Chestnut. I watched the race now. I think you talking about Red Beech.

On the topic of pace making. If ever there is a race that I have seen pace making doing the trick superbly was when Bella Bianca won the Gold Cup in 1998. A young apprentice Faydherbe rode the pacemaker Chaplin and set it up brilliantly for Bella Bianca to win for Felix Coetzee and Millard. Bella Biance is the dam of Jet Belle.
