(Reuters) - South African retail group Steinhoff (SNHG.DE), which is fighting for survival following its disclosure of accounting irregularities, said tycoon and major shareholder Christo Wiese has stepped down as chairman.

Had to happen, how could he be in the position after serving time as chairman during the last while that this debacle happened? He was conflicted and not independent. Fund managers/ asset managers were unhappy form the moment he assumed the role last week
