This is Crazy! Appie mullered by a Zebra

"Apprentice Luke Ferraris was riding work at Ashburton this morning for trainer Paul Gadsby when his mount ducked for a zebra and unseated him. He was taken to hospital for x-rays and has been diagnosed with a fractured left radius. The nursing sister at the South African Jockey Academy Debbie Butt said that this injury will take about six weeks to heal. Ferraris had three rides at Scottsville on Sunday. The eager and talented young rider is chomping at the bit to ride his first winner."

We are on the border of the game reserve. Really beautiful place to train horses. ( We have NEVER been happier Training horses) At times, the Zebras come up onto the course and quite often onto the ridge next to the outside rail. Normally , we send a groom to go and chase them away. This mornings incident was such a pity as this youngster eats, sleeps and lives for Racing.
He has to complete his qualifying rides down the straight.
In today's noms for 21st, we had him lined up to ride Yaas for us. He has been working the filly at home...

We wish him a speedy recovery ! He is talented, this kid.

Reminds me of the day riding my mtb in the sugarcane on the coast and this monster buck flew out onto the firebreak just ahead of me

I used to ride at Yellowwoodpark stableslThe horses went moggie when they saw Zebra across the way at Stainbank reserve.

...do those zebra/s get AHS shots...was an outbreak of AHS in the Cape within the agter Paarl area some years ago....they attributed it to some zebras brought in from Namibia....

Yip, the Zebras used to get the blame...then we found put that vaccinated horses are the biggest carriers....who really knows ?
