Hello people! I am wondering if Betfair Exchange is available in South Africa? I have read conflicting information about this. Is it just banned for South African citizens maybe? I am from England and will be visiting South Africa for a few weeks in April, do you know if I will be able to access the website? Cheers, Bob

Betfair won’t like you using the site from SA ( they abide with the regulations of countries)

The thing is, I'm not exactly sure what the regulations are. There's no info on Betfairs website re this. Is it restricted just for South Africans or for anyone who tries to logon from there?

I mean in theory it would be possible to use a VPN to access the site anyway, and if one accessed the site this way they wouldn't even know if they were in line with regulations or not.

LEt's be clear: It is illegal to play on Betfair, or any gambling site, that does not have a licence here, while in SA. You don't have to read between the lines, it's specific.

You are able to connect to geographically blocked sites by using a VPN. You are able to make payments to and from those sites using credit cards and electronic transfers, but as you do it you are breaking multiple laws specifically prohibiting that, and there will be a long lasting digital trail.

I have only heard of big winners being caught, and then only because of importing the winnings. If you are a foreign national playing with your overseas funds from here, must be a grey area although when in Rome...

Betfair did the blocking themselves when it was pointed out to them in a public forum in SA that they were aiding and abetting SA citizens. Probably keeping their slate clean should they ever apply for a licence.

If you read the Gambling Act, the SA position is basically this: the government is unable to protect it's citizens from gambling crime overseas, but it sits with the fall out of gambling disasters if and when, so they allow and tax legal local gambling with some of that money earmarked for social responsibility, and therefore have specifically banned ex-SA gambling.

I can’t believe your post. The reason is that you are going to sunny SA on a holiday and you are concerned about playing the horses. Once you leave the airport and smell that great sea air of Cape Town horse racing will be the furthest thing on your mind and when your taxi swings around Devils Peak and heads into the City with the majestic Table Mountain on the left you will just want to get to the top and when you are on top of the mountain and you see those breath taking views your urge to punt a horse will be gone. Have a great holiday

Well my account is already funded, and I wouldn't be withdrawing any funds until I get back to England, so I don't think that leaving a trail would be an issue. It's hard to believe Betfair would do anything about a foreign punter betting with a vpn

I have no intention of breaking any laws, but if I use a vpn how will I even know if I'm technically breaking the law, as you say it's a grey area... I mean I tend to use vpn everywhere I go anyway for security reasons, so how would I even know if I'm doing the wrong thing in South Africa? I've probably done it in a country before without realising the local laws

I'm going for a holiday but am keen to use Betfair whilst there to help fund the trip. And of course I'm addicted to Betfair anyway lol, I can't imagine going anywhere without it.

Speaking of the holiday, I will also be visiting neighbouring countries such as Namibia and Zimbabwe, does anyone know if they have similar regulations? I'm finding it very difficult to find this information

I don't know how you guys trade/bet/gamble without Betfair... I mean if I couldn't trade on Betfair I'd forget the horses and do something else for a living. How on earth can you make profit with just the bookies
