Racing. It's a Rush: PRESS RELEASE
Subject: Country course- Durbanville’s fabulous family day
Date: 06th October 2018
If you were not present at Durbanville Racecourse this afternoon, you are going to seriously regret it and perhaps you want to make a mental note to ensure that you join us at our next event.
What was supposed to be an overcast day did little to deter families and they were rewarded with a glorious sun fil ed and action packed afternoon. There were 8 races carded for our magnificent equine athletes as well as the all important jockey chase. This annual event, being the last race of the day and co-ordinated by MJ Byleveld consisted of a dash by 16 jockeys. A not so easy task when they don’t have the horse power beneath them, but in true form, these jockeys put their best foot forward and made a charge from the 100m mark. With a bit of fancy footwork, Aldo Domeyer won the dash in fine style. In a post race interview he confirmed what we already knew in that it was a great vibe on course. MJ who is still rehabilitating an injury has been the driving force behind this initiative for the past few years and his passion and dedication are a huge asset to the industry.
Funds raised were donated to the Western Cape Equine Trust (WCET) and Miracle Kidz based in Constantia who were also in attendance. We were honoured to have the children enjoying a lovely day out, which included the kiddies play area and a lunch sponsored by the Marco Polo Club.
Hosting Market @ The Barn once again, gave ladies the chance to do a bit of retail therapy whilst the potjiekos competition tasting was underway.
Partnered by Boer & Butcher, the voting was unanimous when Team Bosveld Bakkeneers won the R15, 000. In second place was Team One World and in third place, Smokey & The Bandits. But it was Bob’s Builders that took the R5, 000 for the best dressed stand.
Now this weekend really marked the beginning of the exciting Cape summer season with the running of both the Grade 3 World Sports Betting Diana Stakes (Fillies and Mares) and the World Sports Betting Matchem Stakes. The beautiful country course, sees the runners of these races venture into the Cape Mile, the Concord Cup and later the Cape Guineas to be held in December at Kenilworth Racecourse. This is the first race of the season where you witnessed the younger horses (3 year olds) take on the older horses (4 years old and upwards) before embarking on their feature race campaigns. These 2 races are what we call Weight for Age, which means the younger horses carry less weight than the older horses.
Sabine Plattner’s older mare, Love to Boogie under Bernard Fayd’Herbe and trainer Andre Nel won the fillies World Sports Betting Diana Stakes. Bernard continued his winning streak into the next when he rode the Eric Sands trained Rainbow Bridge into the #1 enclosure in the World Sports Betting Matchem Stakes for owner, Chris Gerber.
