The 2018 CTS Ready to Run sale takes place on Friday this week at Durbanville starting 6pm with 113 lots on offer. Live gallops are at 9.30am (corrected) so the schedule is tight with little time to digest the performances before gavel action begins. To have the buyers’ edge you will be well served with eyes on the ground to take it all in and separate the profit from the loss.

Buyers' assistance available from ground zero Thurs. 10am onwards you get -

Stay on top of the action remotely as it unfolds with ongoing text and multimedia updates.[hr]
[img

See the horses from every angle.. front/side/back x walking/trotting as many times as you like. The ultimate buyers’ reference before the sale.. and fond memories beyond.[hr]
[img

You’ve identified your picks using the catalog, sure. Now it’s time to shortlist further by hands-on specimen assessment. But there’s more.. these horses will be galloping to expose their performance markers and give away valuable insights you won’t find in the book.[hr]

A PPA (predictive performance assessment) is a subjective visual and hands-on evaluation for attributes of performance ability or lack thereof. A horseman skilled in this area is known as having ‘the eye’ and is the most important link in the chain to success. Lack of talent can’t be cured![hr]

Conformation is a measurement of ‘correctness’ where a horse is assessed against a standardized set of parameters. In racing, conformation leans toward a focus on bone alignment, angles and relative measurements to assess a horse’s likelihood of holding up to the rigors of racing.[hr]

Liaise with and engage service providers on behalf of clients ie. Vet checks, scoping/x-rays/ultrasound/bloods, Transport – anywhere in SA, Insurance; mortality & life saving surgery cover.[hr]

Assessment day 3rd Nov-18 : Top selections for early career action at the TBA R2R. 7x horses were shortlisted using the R2R trackwork videos (colts only), and then assessed in person at the sales ground where 4x survived the final cut and were put forward as the pre-auction shortlist.

Lot 54 – Check Me Check You
Visionaire (USA) – Cwebe Cwebe (Muhtafal (USA))

Pre-auction : Archetypal precocious sprinter checks all the boxes as a surefire early action prospect with profitable resale end of season. A great example of quality gallop (video) meets quality specimen.

SOLD @ US$ 9700 (ZAR 140 000)
Solid value for money.
[hr]

Lot 77 – AD ALTISIMA
Visionaire (USA) – Hezekiah (ZIM) (Kitalpha (CAN))

Pre-auction : Impressive specimen that stands over ground and has a massive action. Strikes a balance between power and athleticism. Another quality example of gallop (video) matching specimen. Should be effective over middle distance and below at any age. Great all round prospect. Sold for higher than expected but still worth the gamble.

SOLD @ US$ 18 000 (ZAR 260 000)
Higher than expected but still a decent value gamble
[hr]

Lot 91 – THE SANDWICH MAN
Duke of Marmalade (IRE) – Lisa Anne (Rambo Dancer (USA))

Pre-auction : Best gallop video. Sublime action mover that holds together with ease at speed. Imposing and weighty specimen that appears quite mature structurally but still with pudding cover. Considering the quality of his recent track display there appears to be all kinds of promise to come with further development as he strengthens up. Looks like he’ll be most competitive as a late 2yr old/early 3yr old.

SOLD @ US$ 69 000 (ZAR 1 000 000)
A very popular individual that attracted a lot of attention due to his outstanding Group 1 & 2 winning ½ sibling, the result being a premium price tag at the business end. Perhaps too high considering the specimen as he stands, as well the sire who has yet to sparkle in SA in contrast to his international achievements. Nevertheless, his action (in the track video) holds high class promise and so does his Dam’s record as a producer of the magic SW genes.. and bidders pursued this all day long in the ring.
[hr]

Lot 48 – CAPE DOCTOR
Capetown Noir – Chenook (Fort Wood (USA))

Pre-auction : Looks quick and holds up well in action. Not quite in the same league as the others listed above.. he is a small specimen albeit well put together and balanced.. and noticeably light on his feet with a lovely floating trot. At the right price he's an ideal ready to fire prospect to take advantage of the early races and then be sold off at a profit as soon as the opportunity presents itself.

SOLD @ US$ 14 000 (ZAR 200 000)
Attracted a surprising amount of interest at the gavel which saw his price punch way above pedigree and/or specimen value.

2018 CTS R2R wrap up

[img

2x day assessment (22/23 Nov) : After going through 54 colts on-site and factoring in the gallops thereafter, a shortlist of 6 was finalised but there were 3 or 4 others in contention all the way. The comments do not factor in pedigree or the sale prices and are based on specimen. NB. Conformation reports are private and not included here.

Lot 110 – LAND OF THE BRAVE
What A Winter – Niyabah (IRE) (Nashwan (USA))

Pre-auction : Top pick as 2yr old early-action horse for profitable resale. Archetypal sprinter 15.2hh beautifully quartered and muscled with great balance and equally impressive action. The type of horse that steps out winning and competes in the 2yr old listed sprint races upward. Went for less than expected on a night where bidding was furious and prices steep.

SOLD @ R180 000
[hr]

Lot 112 – TALL COTTON
Trippi (USA) – Pacific Dynasty (Dynasty)

Pre-auction : Athletic speedy type, great all round specimen and a contender to take aim at the R2.5mil R2R. 15.2hh. Didn’t give much away on the track beyond what’s already obvious as he stands. Generated massive interest in the yard and in the ring and as expected over-the-top money was required to secure him.

SOLD @ R900 000
[hr]

Lot 87 – unnamed
Soft Falling Rain – Juror (Strike Smartly (CAN))

Pre-auction : 15.2/15.3hh beautiful specimen all round, both on the track as a great mover and in person. Ideal as a contender for the R2.5mil R2R and everything else leading up to it.

SOLD @ R400 000
[hr]

Lot 30 – unnamed
Jackson – Trip to Eden (Trippi (USA))

Pre-auction : A 16.2/16.3hh giant that presents as an athletic classic type. Super mover on the track looking particularly precocious for a big horse. Will probably handle a trip and with pace and a high cruising speed to back it up. Should be able to get it together in time for the R2.5mil R2R race no sweat but the best will be still to come.

SOLD @ R400 000
[hr]

Lot 92 – unnamed
Pomodoro - La Rosita (AUS) (Fasliyev (USA))

Pre-auction : 16.3hh imposing monster of an athlete. Classy specimen with stand-out side profile balance and proportions for a horse of this size and weight. Still ungainly and backward on the track and going to need lots of time to mature and strengthen.

SOLD @ R240 000
[hr]

Lot 82 – OPTIMUM
Oratorio (IRE) – I’ll Be Back (ARG) (Hennessy (USA))

Pre-auction : Barely 15.1hh small compact horse that’s all girth but with the quarter support to match. No faults just a super little specimen that moves well and will perform well early. Not going to hollywood but a smart prospect as a cheapie for early action and resale end of season.

SOLD @ R 70 000
