Plane books trip to Newmarket with Mercury Sprint success
SOUTH AFRICA:
Clairwood, Sunday
Mercury Sprint, Group 1, 6f, turf
J J THE JET PLANE is on his way to Mick De Kock's Newmarket stables after outclassing the opposition when romping home in the Mercury Sprint at Clairwood.
South Africa's top sprinter was uneasy in the market, drifting from 1-2 to 7-10, but Piere Strydom elected to make the most of the strong tail wind and soon had the favourite in front.
In the final furlong, his mount simply strode away without having to be asked a question and sauntered home four lengthsclear of 14-1 shot Rebel King with 100-1 chance Senjor Josh a length and three-quarters away third.
This was the third consecutive Grade 1 win for J J The Jet Plane, who has now been successful in seven of his ten starts. He is a son of champion sire Jet Master, who won the Mercury Sprint eight years ago.
The three-year-old has put ex-jockey Lucky Houdalakis on the map as a trainer, but he now goes to De Kock for an overseas campaign.
Part owner Hendrik du Preez said: "He goes to England next because Mike De Kock has stables there, and then he will be flown to Hong Kong for the big sprint in December followed by Dubai for the carnival meeting.
"Piere used to ride in Hong Kong, and he said today that J J is a true champion and that he can't see him getting beaten in the Hong Kong Sprint."
We wish JJ and all the connections all the best!

Good Luck to all involved in JJ.
Will JJ perform as well on sand as he has on grass.
Would be interesting to see or if someone has any information on his ability to run on sand.

I personally would like to see JJ kept on the grass.
Imo the sand has less 'give' than grass and could cause problems for JJ's legs.
What say Barry Irwin - who knows a thing or two about sand runners?
Respectfully, Jim.
