Entries World Sports Betting 1900

The traditional Greyville opening salvo in the race for a place in Africa’s greatest race, the R4.25-million, Grade 1 Vodacom Durban July, will be fired in the World Sports Betting 1900 at the central Durban course on Saturday, May 18 and no less than 20 big race candidates have been nominated for the R500 000, Grade 2 event.

Surprisingly to some, the Justin Snaith star contender, last year’s Vodacom Durban July winner Do It Again, is not among the 28 entries. The four-year-old Twice Over gelding that followed up his July win with victory in the L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate and a flying second in the Sun Met, had initially been nominated for the Independent On Saturday Drill Hall Stakes this Friday as his start to Champions Season.

However, the stable did not go through with that possibility and he will not feature on Friday evening. His only possible testing season opener, unless he is supplemented into the “1900” next Monday, could now only be in the R1-million, Grade 1 Rising Sun Gold Challenge over 1 600m or the 1 800m, Grade 3 Cup Trial on June 6.

But there is no shortage of interesting and exciting July contenders among the entries where there are five three-year-olds including the Australian-bred Alyaasaat and the Dynasty gelding Protea Paradise from the Mike de Kock stable and the Sean Tarry-trained Silvano colt Zillzaal. Tarry has also nominated the Pomodoro gelding Royal Italian and Duncan Howells has entered his three-year-old Gimmethegreenlight colt, Mr Greenlight.

Dean Kannemeyer has entered his Silvano gelding Silva’s Bullet that ran below general expectations in the Sledgehammer last weekend and Glen Kotzen has nominated Eyes Wide Open that finished an uninspiring fourth in the same race won by the Mike-Azzie-trained Orpheus. Second in that race, the Frank Robinson-trained Roy Had Enough and stable companion Roy’s Riviera, are among the entries for the World Sports Betting 1900.

The Listed East Coast Cup, to be run over 2 000m on the same day, has received 17 entries that include four July nominees of which three – Flichity By Farr, Roy’s Riviera and the Duncan Howells-trained filly Fiorella – are also entries for the main event. Journalist: Richard McMillan

Orpheus, end-to-end winner of The Sledgehammer on the poly track at Greyville just over a week ago, has been supplemented into the forthcoming Grade 2 World Sports Betting 1900 to be run on the turf at the central Durban venue on Saturday, May 18.

The five-year-old Western Winter gelding from the Mike and Adam Azzie yard, depending on how he does in the traditional 1 900m preparation opener for Vodacom Durban July entries, may even throw his hat into the ring for Africa’s greatest race.

The Sledgehammer, run over 1 800m, had been switched from Scottsville to the Greyville poly track where Orpheus made his first all-weather appearance and relished the going under jockey Marco van Rensburg. He blistered away from the opposition to set a new 1 800m course record for the poly 1 800 of 106.64 secs and following the manner of his sensational win, the stipendiary stewards requesting explanations from the other riders in the race.

But in an interview with Sporting Post, Marco said he had learned how to ride the gelding in his two previous races on him saying Orpheus was a horse that was going to be “something smart” and he would love to ride him over 2 00m on the turf at Greyville. Marco said the gelding loved to go fast using his elastic stride “and he doesn’t stop.” He was so confident in the ability of his mount that “uses his stride and has a high cruising speed” that he told other riders at the start of The Slegehammer that “they were going to feel like they had been in a 1 000m race.”

Final declarations for the World Sports Betting 1900 are on Thursday, May 9. Journalist: Richard McMillan

Marcus has "landed" a decent ride.
Guessing has never been widely acclaimed as a good gambling strategy.

The Justin Snaith stable, that has four of its nine Vodacom Durban July entries among the top 10 in the opening betting for Africa’s greatest race at Greyville on July 6, will see three of his leading contenders in action at the central Durban venue on Saturday in the R500 000, Grade 2 World Sports Betting 1900.

Last year’s winner of the R4.25-million, Grade 1 event over 2 200m on the tradition first Saturday in July, Do It Again, is offered at 5-1 in the World Sports Betting odds now published on the betting group’s website with the Mike de Kock-trained hero Hawwaam heading the boards at 4-1 and Hawwaam’s half brother and Sun Met winner Rainbow Bridge at 11-2.

The field for the Grade 2 “1900” that will head the card at Greyville on Saturday which includes the Listed East Coast Cup over 2 000m, has trimmed down to 12 runners and three of the top Snaith July entries are included. The four-year-old Horse Chestnut gelding Magnificent Seven that won the Western Cape Stayers in his last outing is 18-1 in the July betting and with apprentice Luke Ferraris in the irons has a good draw at five off the paint.

Peninsula Handicap winner Doublemint gets the services of Anton Marcus and he has an even better draw at four while the third of the Snaith contingent, Made Top Conquer, is on offer by World Sports Betting at 28-1 and is not badly drawn at seven.

Also on offer in the Vodacom Durban July betting at 28-1 is the Western Winter gelding Orpheus from the Mike and Adam Azzie yard that was a stunning wire-to-wire winner of the recent The Sledgehammer. He has yet to be entered for the big one on July 6 but the bookies appear to be taking no chances of a long-shot ante post bet if he gets a big race run.

Saturday’s field also includes the Robbie Hill-trained Camphoratus, surprise winner at 66-1 of the Grade 1 Empress Club Stakes at Turffontein with Gareth Wright retaining the ride from good draw one off the rail. The four-year-old filly is on offer in the July betting at 100-1 along with the four-year-old Silvano gelding Silver God from the Sean Tarry stable that will hop from Draw 6 and the Joey Ramsden stable inmate Fresnaye that jockey S’manga Khumalo will have to navigate from the 11 draw on Saturday.

Trainer Glen Kotzen’s July entry Eyes Wide Open for which he has an opening price of 70-1 will have Warren Kennedy in the irons from draw nine on Saturday.

The top opening betting for the Vodacom Durban July to be run over 2 200m at Greyville on July 6, as offered by World Sports Betting is:
4-1 Hawwaam; 5-1 Do It Again; 11-2 Rainbow Bridge; 10-1 Barahin; 18-1 Magnificent Seven; 20-1 Doublemint; 22-1 Head Honcho; 25-1 Twist Of Fate; 28-1 Made To Conquer, Orpheus; 33-1 and upwards others. Journalist: Richard McMillan.
