Jack Milner: There appear to be some really good bets on Tuesday’s Vaal card and that augurs well for the exotics and some attractive All To Come bets.

MAY 6, 2019
The run should begin in Race 2 where Mike de Kock sends out Masaaqaat in a Juvenile Plate for fillies over 1450m on the Classic track. Other than 1000m events, all the other races are run around the turn so draws are important over this sort of distance.

This New Zealand-bred daughter of Snitzel jumps from barrier No 5 in this 10-horse field and that should be good enough for her to open her account. Muzi Yeni takes the ride. Masaaqaat looks to be both a BiPot and Place Accumulator banker.

The main danger could come from Tobie Spies-trained She’s So Sassi who ran in the Listed Ruffian Stakes behind Basadi Faith, who on Saturday racked up her fourth successive win by taking the SA Fillies Nursery (Grade 2).

De Kock has another banker in Race 3, where he saddles consistent Stockbridge in a Maiden Plate over 1200m He has raced five times for four places, finishing runner-up in his last three starts. The move back to 1200m from 1400m should be ideal as he only got caught in the final stages of his last couple of races.

The only threat could come from Sean Tarry-trained Al Mutawakel who is an unraced full-brother to 2017 SA Derby winner Al Sahem. If he is anything like his brother, Al Mutawakel could find 1200m too short, so that makes Stockbridge a strong PA and BiPot Banker. He also could be a Pick 6 banker as should Al Mutawkel win and Stockbridge run second, a raced runner-up to a first-timer still counts.

The best of the lot comes up in Race 4 where Joe Soma saddles Eightfolds Lass in a Maiden Plate for fillies and mares over 1450m. She ran on far too late on the Turffontein Inside track last time but the longer run-in at the Vaal should be ideal. She was narrowly beaten in her penultimate start and will be ridden by Gavin Lerena.

Another banker in all bets.

Chariot Of Gold could be another banker in Race 5, a MR 74 Handicap for fillies and mares over 2400m. Tarry’s charge has been running against far stronger and in quite a few cases has taken on the colts. Her merit rating has fallen and now back against her own sex, where the average merit rating is just 64, this daughter of Silvano should be right in firing line.

She finished a two-length third behind Secret Potion in the SA Oaks so the distance should not be a concern.

The only threat is likely to come from Bated Breath so she could be a good back-up in the BiPot and Pick 6.
