Gold Circle Media Release: First Entries: RISING SUN GOLD CHALLENGE AND SUPPORTING FEATURES
Top gallopers Rainbow Bridge, Do It Again and Undercover Agent are among the 12 entries for the R1-million, Grade 1 Rising Sun Gold Challenge to be run over 1 600m at Greyville in Durban on Saturday, June 8.
Rainbow Bridge, that led Vodacom Durban July and L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate winner Do It Again across the line in the Cape’s premier event, the Grade 1 Sun Met over 2 000m, is having his second start in KwaZulu-Natal for trainer Eric Sands having run a brilliant second to Undercover Agent from the Brett Crawford stable in the Independent On Saturday Drill Hall Stakes over 1 400m, a distance short of his best.
Undercover Agent last weekend followed that up with a super fourth, giving his opposition a lot of weight, in the Grade 1 Tsogo Sun Sprint over 1 200m at Scottsville and could finish in the money again if he stands his ground for this important race.
Do It Again has proven an absolute star for trainer Justin Snaith and while the 1 600m is a touch short of his best distance, if he stands his ground for this race he will have to be rated a big runner.
The top Cape trio has some useful opposition from the Highveld and KwaZulu-Natal with the likes of the Dynasty filly Lady In Black from the Dennis Drier yard that finished second in both the Paddock Stakes and Majorca Stakes among the entries. The Sean Tarry stable has entered Cirillo that was second in the Horse Chestnut and third in the Independent on
Saturday Drill Stakes and Trip To Heaven that nearly caused an upset in the Tsogo Sun Sprint where he flew late for second place.
Mike de Kock has entered his Horse Chestnut winner Soqrat and Geoff Woodruff has nominated his Hawaii Stakes winner Zouaves.
The Grade 3 Cup Trial over 1 800m, the last of the main features in which Vodacom Durban July entries could impress the July Selection Committee, has drawn 22 entries including nine nominees for Africa’s greatest race on July 6. Among them are Justin Snaith’s Peninsula Handicap winner Doublemint and Frank Robin’s duo of Roy Had Enough and Roy’s Riviera, the former having the choice of this race or the Gold Challenge in which to make an impression for a July berth.

All of the above non-juvenile races cater for two-year-old allowances. Does this mean 2yo’s are indeed allowed to race? Just imagine Frosted Gold and/or Battleoftrafalgar running in the Gold Challenge? Ooooh yes

With Clouds Unfold being injured, Lady In Black will take some stopping in the Tibouchina Stakes should the stable leave her in that race. Makes no sense to let her take part in the Rising Sun, can't see her beating any of Rainbow Bridge, Do It Again and or Soqrat, or to leave her in the Cup Trial, where she would be conceding weight to the entire field.
The obvious danger has to be Oh Susanna, but I would imagine she is looking for further.

Guessing has never been widely acclaimed as a good gambling strategy.

i see in the Cup Trial Last of a Legend is carded to carry 43.5kg... Firstly, could any of our jocks even get remotely close to that? Secondly, what is the lowest weight carried in a race in SA?

At the moment according to what I have come across the minimum weight is 50kgs in Pinnacle Races. Apprentices can claim 4kgs so it can go to 46kgs.
Bush Telegraph won the July as 3yo with 49kgs in 1987.
In my teens there was a filly that won with 44kgs in Cape Town. Cant recall its name though.
There was a filly called Getaway that won a feature with 48kgs in Cape Town.
