Mighty Murtagh wins
Goodwood top jock award
Top of his game: Johnny Murtagh recieves the award for top jockey at Glorious Goodwood from Racing Post chief analyst Graham Dench
JOHNNY MURTAGH picked up yet another prize in a memorable season as he landed the Racing Post award for top jockey at Glorious Goodwood with a record-equalling effort on Saturday.
In a style reminiscent of his Goodwood Cup success on Yeats, the Irishman romped clear in the closing stages to maintain the advantage he had built up going into the last of the meeting's five days.
Richard Hughes cut his lead to one with an early success on River Proud but Murtagh pulled away again with a double on Halfway To Heaven in the Group 1 Nassau Stakes and Jukebox Jury in a maiden to give him eight winners for the week - equalling the record set by Lester Piggott in 1982 and matched by Kieren Fallon in 1998.
Murtagh, who has ridden 14 of Aidan O'Brien's Group 1 winners this season and also won the award for top jockey at Royal Ascot in June, was presented with his prize of a silver salver by Racing Post chief analyst Graham Dench.
Besides the Goodwood Cup and the Sussex Stakes on Henrythenavigator, his other notable successes of the week included Enticing in the Audi Stakes and Sixties Icon in the Glorious Stakes.
“It has been a great week, Goodwood has been brilliant to us,” Murtagh said. “We have had two Group 1s, Yeats, and outside winners as well. I have really enjoyed my time here. Things just keep rolling along.
“The manner of Yeats's win, it was all very easy to him. Henrythenavigator was good again - he has got a couple of big engagements before the year is out and hopefully he can maintain it to the end of the season.”
Reflecting on his uncanny knack of seeming always to be in the right place at the right time, he said: “I am riding a lot of good horses so I always give them the best chance of winning - if it means having them close I have them close, if it means dropping them in I drop them. I do what is best for the horse on any given today and that is all I have to do.”
