Racing post
New BHA chair Annamarie Phelps has warned that racing faces a "profound ethical challenge" over equine welfare due to changing social attitudes.
She was speaking at the Racehorse Owners Association annual meeting in London on Tuesday as she made her first public speech since taking over as chair of the governing body at the start of June.
In a wide-ranging address, Phelps also said racing should make more of the participation of women within the sport and that now was the time for unity between its factions.
On the issue of welfare, Phelps said digital technology and demographic change were producing a generational change in thinking.
She said: "We need to live in the real world and understand that those coming of age as adults now may have very different views to their parents.
"We can see the impact in people's views on animal welfare, where racing faces a profound ethical challenge.
"We are seeing the rise of the 'social consumer' who really cares about what they buy and that it doesn't harm the planet, or its people or its creatures."

Its unbelievable that garbage like this is even put into the print media. I can think of so much to say but really to even respond to crap like this would be giving it some credence.

in my opinion all these issues are related to Jooste collapse.
he brought horse racing into the cross hairs of politicks and unions
i am sure these are the 1st of many attacks to come on racing.

Seriously Sylvester, the political opportunity suits the occasion. Where are these people when Dundee has their July??? When bush racing is broadcasted on Carte Blanche and shows the police cars and officers present partaking in the spectacle? The treatment of "berg" horses? I can go on and on.
Race horses receive by en large the best treatment for most of their lives. It is just fashionable to bring this shit up because it affects the perceived middle & upper class.
What would happen if it was law tomorrow that all animals had to be registered in South Africa and proof of payment of such had to be produced??? Marches with burning of property and looting, certainly not what these pseudo politicians and animal lovers want to highlight and deal with.
There should be new law that fines the bunny huggers found with overweight pets that have been fed inappropriate food, "tit bits", that end up on medication for high BP, diabetes, asthma and glaucoma.
Absolute trite this
Would love to see the IFP investigate the uncontrolled killing of Leopards strictly for their skins in Northern KwazuluNatal. I suppose nobody wants to discuss this? The same bunnyhuggers should go to Northern KwaZuluNatal and confront the traditional leaders that proudly display the Leopards skins at ceremonies. Please do so and send pictures.

i 100% agree with u TS.
i would however reserve comment on treatment of horses until we have a clear protocol on ex racehorses.
every year 1000 + horses retire/ex breeding stock/unsold babies/unsound babies!!! where do they go? what happens to ex Mauritius race horses when they done racing? if the Bunny huggers drill that query Racing SA could have serious questions to answer.

Nobody wants to actually euthanize race horses at the end of their careers because it is not pc however we are happy that millions of chickens, sheep, goats and cattle are slaughtered every day.
The traditional slitting of the throats of sheep, goats and cattle are ok though.
Besides Sylvester there are numerous examples of tens of thousands of abused animals that could be highlighted daily just not as fashionable as racehorses.
We currently live in a society that affords itself the luxury to have selective opinions and selecting causes to champion without actually dealing with the realities before us daily.
