Cape Trainers - Stop Whinging and Start Nominating
5 years 8 months ago - 5 years 8 months ago
Greg Ennion was very quick to jump up last Monday at the RA Meeting and say how sick and tired he was that there is no longer any consistency with which days Cape has racing - sometimes it's Tuesday, other times Wednesday - and also said how unfavourable it is to the province that Cape racing never gets a stand alone weekend meeting and is always forced to share with Gauteng or KZN.
On Wednesday, Greyville's first 3 races comprise of 1400m Maiden races - total runners carded ..... 42
In comparison :
Kenilworth 07 September :
1 x 1400 m Maiden - 8 Runners
1 x 1600 m Maiden - 7 Runners
Durbanville 10 September :
1 x 1250 m Maiden - 11 Runners
1 x 1600 m Maiden - 9 Runners
1 x 1400 m Maiden - 12 Runners
1 x 1800 m Maiden - 8 Runners
Durbanville 14 September :
1 x 1250 m Maiden - 9 Runners
1 x 1400 m Maiden - 10 Runners
1 x 1600 m Maiden - 10 Runners
That totals 84 runners spread over 3 meetings and 4 different distances. The smallest field of the 3 Maidens at Greyville on Wednesday is the same size as the WC's biggest field in that 3 meeting period.
Maybe if the starting stalls were filled a bit more often somebody would look a minor race programme shuffle .....

I do not have the figures but do know that there are about 400 less horses to race
in Cape Town than 2 years ago
Add to the problem the number of 2yo that will be using stables but will not be racing
for a few plus months
Result a Disaster
I think shortly they will race once a week and need a miracle to continue

as per NHRA website. end of 2018/2019 season
last season 6194 horses raced in SA and Zimbabwe.some horses raced in multiple provinces.
Zimbabwe raced 169 different horses thru the season. racing on average 8 times each in the season
Western Cape raced 1344 different horses thru the season. racing on average 4 times each in the season.
201 horses only raced once the entire season
208 horses only raced twice the entire season
216 horses only raced three times the entire season. cant imagine to much fun racing these 625 horses.neraly half of all the horses in the WC
Eastern Cape raced 1154 different horses thru the season. racing on average 6 times each in the season
KZN raced 2088 different horses thru the season. racing on average 4.5 times each in the season

I must say I don't understand why the numbers in the Cape are so bad out of season. Besides the big days, you never see big fields. Perhaps Kenilworth Racing is missing a trick. For trainers that rent boxes from KR surely there should be an obligation to provide runners? To have 200 horses only race once a season is mind boggling unless they are all 2 yo's. Surely to goodness a minimum amount of runs per stable in a season should be mandatory?
