No not a pice of fish in batter but top sprinter trained by Jean Barnard.
Horse authority has made name available for re-use in their wisdom(dom = dumb)
Total disgrace.

What a disgrace!! this practise should not be allowed!! Can't breeders come up with their own names?

The 'other' one was named Smackeroo, not Smackaroo.

sunera
Fools Holme
Arctic Cove
All multiple grade 1 winners.

I see no problem with it if you can use it to the horse's advantage - perhaps auction off the name and all proceeds to Horse care etc(like personalised number plates) - imagine the premium you could charge! Also the horse should be called Smackaroo II imho

when you go the NHRA site and type in Smackeroo it comes up with:
The name "smackeroo" is already taken. Please choose another.
Sunera and Fools Holme are imported horses, not registered as SA horses.
Arctic Cove was 'just another horse'. Not a champion.

I too would accept a horse like Artic Cove anytime, but I think that in terms of naming rights it is formal champions that are protected, not the runners up or 'good' or even 'very good' horses.
After all, the rule is there so that the decision isn't left to whoever answers the phone. They have lists and names either are on or they aren't. They don't think about any of this. I know, I've tried to reason with them and it's yet to work.
So Arctic Cove, or Pablo Zeta have the same status as Damascus Hostess the 10yo maiden. Time for us attack the rule if this aggravates us.

Its common in the UK for 10/11/12year olds still running. The Trader who is 10 is running in a big sprint at Ascot this weekend.

mori, I can see nothing wrong if a 10 or 11 y.o. is still running, running places or the odd win & the horse obviously still enjoys racing.
the difference is when the horse is a battling 10 y.o. WHO HAS EARNED NIL IN STAKES.... HIS / HER WHOLE CAREER ! - & the trainer still perseveres with this type of horse.
