Fellow racing enthusiasts
I notice track variant in the FotoForm.
Can anyone explain what this is and how one can use it in handicapping/selecting.
Appreciated
Kel

Hi Kel
Track Variant would be going, early pace etc
Slower the going = slower overall times and 400-finish times
Slow early pace could also be a track variant ( others might disagree)

I think it's to do with the state of the going and wind effect on that day e.g. if the going on the day is (say) soft to heavy, then the time are shown with a minus(-) meaning so many seconds slower than if the going was good, conversely, if say the race in question is run during the Joburg winter when the tracks are hard and running quick, this is shown with a plus(+) and should be adjusted down/taken off the time. The same principle applies to the headwind/tailwind prevailing on the day.
I have noticed the fastest times clocked are recorded at altitude and during the winter months. Sometimes it can be misleading (my personal opinion).

Guessing has never been widely acclaimed as a good gambling strategy.

Bob, Bayern,
Thank you both for the information.
As much as I was aware that the track variant was a reflection of how fast or slow the track was running on the day taking into consideration the wind, track condition, and other prevailing factors I was uncertain how to use it in my handicapping. From your explanation Bayern I expect I should subtract a (+) from the winners time and add a (-). This adds considerable value to the handicapping.
Much appreciated guys!

Well that`s the art of being a handicapper, realising that slower times doesn`t always mean slower horses

Absolutely Bob. These little intricacies is what makes handicapping exciting! You express it well - handicapping is an art and not just a science!
