More Than Two Dozen Charged in Horse Racing Doping Scheme
5 years 3 months ago
From the New York Times
www.nytimes.com/2020/03/09/sports/horse-racing-doping.html
Federal prosecutors announced charges on Monday against more than two dozen racehorse trainers, veterinarians and drug distributors in a wide-ranging series of indictments that laid out a corrupt scheme to secretly dope horses and cheat the betting public in what has become a $100 billion global industry.
Among the 27 people charged was Jason Servis, the trainer of Maximum Security, one of the best racehorses in the world. He covertly administered performance-enhancing drugs “to virtually all the racehorses under his control,” the indictment charged, adding that from February 2018 to February 2020 he entered horses in more than 1,000 races.
In May, Maximum Security crossed the finish line first at the Kentucky Derby, only to be disqualified for almost knocking over a rival horse and slowing the momentum of others. Country House, a 65-1 shot, was named the winner. Last month, Maximum Security won $10 million at the Saudi Cup at the King Abdulaziz racecourse in Riyadh, the world’s richest race
The scheme, as laid out in four separate indictments against a total of 27 people, was to manufacture and distribute adulterated and misbranded drugs and to secretly administer them to racehorses under their control.

Jason Servis! Wow! I hope Interbet does not take back my winnings from Maximum Security in the Saudi Cup.

Paul Peter got fined R650 000 on the 6 July 2016,some of it suspended for 2 years.
Then he got fined another R80 000 on the 28 September 2018.
Both for prohibited substances, one testosterone propionate and the other flumethasone.
He's still training here and doing very well.
How many chances are you allowed to cheat here before you get banned?

You are correct this is a major blow for racing in general.
We have always had a poor image from non racing people and this is a massive blow.😢

Maximum Security all his wins is definitely tarnished now. The Coolmore mafia paid big money to get a share in him and for future stud duties as gone to Baffert. The objection in the Kentucky Derby maybe was karma.

.....the USA have had legal doping since early 1970.s.....Lasix and/or Salix are administered to almost every horse whether it bleeds or not.....and it is declared in racecards like we declare gear aluminium shoes and blinkers.....so no surprises that others use other enhancing medication.....because the use of strong diuretics like Lasix helps purge most medication before race day testing anyway.....they opened the door to cheating just like our NHRA back in the day turned a blind eye to local steroid use and only started doing something when the Godolphin saga in UK showed widespread steroid abuse.....Barry is strongly against Lasix abuse/use in USA as it became a gateway to other medication and hence looked to other racing jurisdictions to expand his racing interests.....

The Jockey Club of Saudi Arabia (JCSA) is withholding prize-money for the world's richest race, the $20 million Saudi Cup, due to criminal charges against the winning trainer Jason Servis in the US.
Servis landed the inaugural running of the contest in Riyadh with Maximum Security on February 29 but is one of 27 individuals facing charges as part of an alleged widespread doping scheme.
An indictment released in the United States District court last month states a designer, performance-enhancing substance was administered to Maximum Security in 2019, when he was named champion three-year-old colt in the US.
"The JCSA is aware that Jason Servis has been indicted in the US on charges relating to the administration of prohibited substances to horses under his care and control," the organisation said.
"JCSA is conducting its own investigation in respect of the allegations and until that is concluded, will withhold payment of prize-money to all connections of horses placed in prize-winning positions.
"The decision has been communicated privately to connections of Saudi Cup runners. Due to difficult operational circumstances caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, the investigation is not yet concluded."
