The correct thing was to postpone the sale and that has now been done
The ongoing problem is the stakes that will be on offer in the future
No stakes equals no owners
Even if horses are given away they still have to be fed
The export protocol has just received another excuse
It will be a cold day in hell when that eventually happens
Phumelela should have shed staff months ago and now its too late
Racing is about to fold its tent
TOO LATE TOO LATE

Hope for racing in SA it does happen, basically an entire industry in SA is relying on it happening. Stakes plunge plus no exports would bring bad times to many people, anxiety must be high right now.

even if it does happen why on earth would a foreign buyer waste their time buying yearlings here? Even if they are dirt cheap you cannot get away from the fact that barring a few exceptions our horses are not really world class - I just think this export ruse is a nothing event - The converse has always been true - imported horses have done exceptionally well here and those horses were not in any world sales toppers in their home countries - If a mid price Aussie import can win Graded races here why would any foreign buyer want to buy our top horses instead of looking at the Aussie market?

...ja no use of getting over confident that the job is done .....and then out of left field the unimaginable happens..... this is a bigger setback than an actual AHS outbreak.....

The export protocol will be way down the EU ‘s priorities now
Plus if it’s not done before the end of the year they might need to discuss separately with the UK ( Brexit )
Also what sires in SA would appeal to overseas buyers?

i have asked this question before somewhere on the ABC site.
why do we think the export protocol will save SA racing?
who will it benefit? certain top end Stud Farms ??? certain big owners ?? certain big trainers? of the current 5800 horses in training or up for sale. how many are export quality and what financial benefit would the average owner/punter/trainer get from these limited exports?
will it benefit the stakes pot?? i don see how ? seeing that the stake spot comes out of gambling revenue.
this is not the silver bullet to save SA Racing in its current form. more a red herring to deflect from other deficiencies in the Phumelela Model

It looks pretty apparent to me that opening up exports will primarily benefit the breeding industry only. But only up to a point unless they are targeting secondary racing jurisdictions.
The fact is that, despite endlessly blowing the 'we are world class' trumpet, we breed fairly competitive horses only up to about 1400m, about Grade 2 (optimistically) up to a mile, very average horses up to a mile and a quarter & world class shite over any distance of a mile and a half +. ( I have long enjoyed teasing local breeding fanboys by claiming that most SA stamina horses probably couldn't beat a top UK hurdler in a head-to-head even if allowed to bypass the hurdles).
So we immediately rule ourselves out of many of the global classics.
Unless UK buyers want horses for Wolverhampton, Lingfield and Southwell don't expect a stampede of buyers from there. Ditto USA.
Hong Kong will remain mildly interested at our discount prices so perhaps we will be targeting emerging juridictions such as China. But not for long because they have the financial firepower to buy top end horses if they get a taste for it.
I predict we will end up like New Zealand whose racing is somewhat modest. New who?
If your'e looking into a crystal ball then check out Dubai. We used to be fairly competitive until the big boys started to take it seriously. Now we are truly a bit player. Examining Mike De Kock's commendable record a few years back reveals the reality that many of his notable achievements were with imports and not locally bred horses.
When we start touting horses by VAR (no disrespect intended) as potential Met winners you have to accept that we have pretty much bred most of the historical stamina out of our local gene pool.
I won't be around to witness it but I wouldn't be in the least surprised if the distances for both the July and Met are reduced at some point in the future to about 1800m so as to cater to the ability of the type of horse being bred locally.

The export protocol could help if a shorter quarantine period allows stallions
to shuttle in and return over a short period
The whole gene pool would be improved in a fairly short time as happened in
Australia
New mares would still be needed and lets hope they come from places
where they don't race on Lasix
