31 March 2020 by Declan Schuster - hkjc.com
Preview and form for the meeting on the All Weather track at Sha Tin on Wednesday night. Selections by Declan Shuster.
SHA TIN SELECTIONS
(Wednesday, April 1, 2020)
Race 1: #11 Exponents, #4 Aurora Steed, #7 Great Son, #3 General Trump
Race 2: #4 Good Luck Money, #9 Little Thunder, #10 Golden Mission, #2 Gracious Ryder
Race 3: #14 Master Bernini, #4 Curling Luxury, #7 Hidden Spirit, #12 Winners Brother
Race 4: #7 Excel Delight, #6 Daily Beauty, #11 Sky Treasure, #2 Goldie Flanker
Race 5: #1 Jade Fortune, #14 Super Red Dragon, #11 All For St Paul’s, #3 King’s Race
Race 6: #11 Utopia Life, #4 Wind N Grass, #8 Flying Genius, #3 Mega Heart
Race 7: #6 Red Elysees, #4 Righteous Doctrine, #11 Owners’ Star, #8 Acclaimed Light
Race 8: #3 Buddies, #13 Elite Patch, #1 Glorious Artist, #2 Dances With Dragon
Race 1: Silvermine Bay Handicap
#11 Exponents’ last win came off a mark of 28 on a Wednesday night at Sha Tin and having now returned to that mark, it appears as though lightning is preparing to strike twice, especially with that jockey, Grant van Niekerk getting the leg up again. His best is up to this and with even luck he’s going to take a power of beating. #4 Aurora Steed has steadily improved with each outing this term. His recent dirt trial caught the eye and if he handles the surface on race day, then he’s in with a leading chance, especially with Joao Moreira up. The Brazilian ace is fresh off a Sunday five-timer at Sha Tin. #7 Great Son joined the Paul O’Sullivan stable at the start of this season and since then has looked good. Zac Purton rode a double for O’Sullivan on Sunday and their good fortune can continue here. #3 General Trump is consistent, and he warrants respect.
Race 2: Kiu Tsui Handicap (2nd Section)
#4 Good Luck Money steps out on debut for championship leading trainer Ricky Yiu. He caught the eye in a recent trial on the dirt at Conghua, cruising up to cross the line with stablemate Team Power who has subsequently finished second last Sunday at Sha Tin. He’s worth taking a chance on in a very open Class 4 contest. #9 Little Thunder is another who has caught the eye at the trials. He led that day and is a chance to employ those tactics here on race day as he looks to offset the wide draw. #10 Golden Mission is winless. He’s mixed his form but has shown his capabilities on his day and a recent trial on the dirt suggested he handles the surface. #2 Gracious Ryder is next best.
Race 3: Tung Wan Handicap
Tony Millard has an exceptional record with stable transfers and #14 Master Bernini looks ready to join that list. Although he’s winless across 25 starts, he has shown steady improvement, especially on the dirt and with only 116 on his back, he can take this contest out. #4 Curling Luxury is the likely leader of this. He gets the services of Zac Purton here which is a good push and as a winner on the surface previously, he rates as a leading chance. #7 Hidden Spirit is looking for back-to-back course and distance wins. He remains in Class 5 off that win which is suitable, and he maps to get the right run from gate two. #12 Winners Brother is winless, but he turned his form around last start when missing by a short head at 94/1. He’s next best if he can reproduce that effort here.
Race 4: Kiu Tsui Handicap (1st Section)
#7 Excel Delight is a course and distance winner already this season. He narrowly missed last start and he gets an excellent chance here to atone for that performance. Joao Moreira takes the reins again and he’s drawn to get the gun run from gate two. #6 Daily Beauty has shown steady improvement across his short three-start career. He’s another who has been favoured by the draw and at his second start on the dirt, he’s expected to improve sharply. #11 Sky Treasure is a three-time course and distance winner. He’s won off this mark before and if he finds the front early, he could take plenty of running down. #2 Goldie Flanker is next best.
Race 5: Pui O Handicap
#1 Jade Fortune steps back to Class 4 now which suits and with Zac Purton taking over he appears ready to win. He’s a Class 2 winner previously so the step back now to this grade should prove fruitful, especially off a number of solid Class 3 performances this term. #14 Super Red Dragon gets in light with only 114lb to carry from gate two. He’s drawn to get the gun run and with no weight on his back he remains a leading player. #11 All For St Paul’s is lightly raced but he has displayed plenty of ability across his short three-start career. With further improvement he can figure and he’s one who is more than likely not going to relish the added distance. #3 King’s Race has already recorded one all-the-way win this term and he’s expected to try similar here. He’ll run them along and is capable of holding on for prize money.
Race 6: Clear Water Bay Handicap
#11 Utopia Life is unlucky not to have already won across his career but still, he gets an excellent chance to finally go on with it here. He’s drawn to get a nice run and with luck in the straight, he can deliver for Chad Schofield and Manfred Man. #4 Wind N Grass has shown steady improvement across his career and he tackles the dirt for the first time here. Suspect he handles the surface as he’s on the seven day back-up here in order to shed his maiden tag. #8 Flying Genius rarely runs a bad race and his forward style of running can ensure he’s in with a chance here. He’s drawn beautifully for Zac Purton who should be able to control the tempo and give him every chance. #3 Mega Heart has placed four times over this course and distance this season. He’s consistent and is not out of his depth against this bunch.
Race 7: Hap Mun Bay Handicap
#6 Red Elysees narrowly missed over this course and distance two starts ago, before stepping out over 1650m to finish a close-up fifth. He’ll relish the return in trip to 1800m here and with even luck this is his to lose. #4 Righteous Doctrine is looking for back-to-back wins after ending his streak of 15 runs without a win. He’s found his groove and with Joao Moreira retaining the ride he warrants plenty of respect. #11 Owners’ Star is consistent and he hasn’t been too far away over this course and distance previously. This is suitable although still, more difficult. #8 Acclaimed Light is next best.
Race 8: Cheung Sha Handicap
#3 Buddies ran a blinder last start on the turf and he returns to his preferred course and distance here. Joao Moreira hops up and has a three-time course and distance winner previously he rates as the one to beat, especially breaking gate three. #13 Elite Patch is a two-time dirt winner previously. He steps up in trip here which is the unknown but his last few runs have given the impression that he is ready for it and his latest trial caught the eye. Three out of #1 Glorious Artist’s four wins have come over this course and distance, each time with Zac Purton up and again this galloper warrants respect, especially in Class 2 which he is proven in. #2 Dances With Dragon bagged his first win for Caspar Fownes last start and lines up again here. He’s next best.

Tim Carroll preview
This Wednesday sees an eight-race card on the All Weather (dirt) track from Sha Tin, which gets underway at 12.15pm. The feature of the meeting is the finale race 8, the Class 2 Cheung Sha Handicap (3.50pm), over the mile (1650m).
Joao Moreira was in sublime form on the weekend when booting home a five timer and now leads Zac Purton by two winners in a see-sawing jockeys title battle which looks sure to enthral us all until the conclusion.
Moreira became just the fourth jockey to ride 900 winners in Hong Kong joining elite company, Douglas Whyte, Zac Purton and Tony Cruz, and he should move into third spot somewhere in the near future.
My Next Best (NB) selection, EXCEL DELIGHT, goes in race 4 on the card, The Class 4 Kiu Tsui Handicap (1.45pm), over 6 furlongs.
The 4yo isn’t one of the stable stars from the John Size yard, but he wont need to be to win this.
He finished in second spot last time out over course & distance and probably would have won had he drawn a decent gate. On that occasion he was planted three deep and without cover for much of the trip, and was only chinned right on the line (not to mention it was reported he was kicked by the lead pony on the way down to the start).
The race maps completely differently for him today from the low draw in 2, and with early speed from the likes of 4,5,& 10, the selection should be able to box seat in behind the leaders without having to gas early, and just as importantly, he’ll be able to grab some cover.
The selections goes up 2lb in the handicap today, but I think he should be able to grab that back and a bit more with what looks likely to be a far more efficient run in transit.
He’s had the four spins on the dirt track (all over 6 furlongs) for one win and two silver medals, and with an in form Joao Moreira in the saddle, the selection should take plenty of holding out after a luckless run last time.
My each-way selection (EW) SUPER RED DRAGON goes in race 5, The Class 4 Pui O Handicap (2.15pm) over the mile (1650m).
It’s not to often I find myself siding with a one that has gone up in grade for being beaten, but I’m prepared to make an exception for the 4yo from the Chris So yard, and for several reasons.
Firstly, the selection is a lightly raced 4yo who is definitely progressing. Last time out he made up stealthy headway to grab the bronze in a race where he took a bit of a tug toward the rear after they dropped anchor up front.
This race looks more suitable as the tempo will be solid with the 3,9,10 & 11 all likely to look to go forward, and although going up in grade, SUPER RED DRAGON carries a massive 19lb less today.
The selection has been over the trip once on the dirt in this grade. On that occasion it was from a 2lb higher mark, he drew the widest stall and had to be snagged back to the tail before circling the entire field to run 4th to a horse who then came out and won a Class 3 at his next start.
Today from stall 2 the race set up should be far more suitable for the selection, and although he wont be on the front end, I suspect he’ll be able to sit a bit closer than he has been lately, and from the bottom of the weights, and with natural improvement, the son of Starspangledbanner looks a cracking each-way play here.
My best bet (NAP) on the card, FLYING GENIUS, goes in Race 6, The Class 3 Clear Water Bay Handicap (2.45pm) over 6 furlongs.
The 3yo from the Tony Cruz yard has won two of his 6 starts to date and was runner up last time out when having his first spin on the dirt.
He had to do plenty of early work from a wide gate that day, and he was only picked off late by an exciting type who was winning for the third time at just his fourth outing.
The selection had four of these in behind (in order 9,5,2,3) last time, and despite being worse off at the weights today due to Purton taking over from 7lb claimer, he had a tougher run than the others and, well as just stated, you have Purton taking over which goes a long way to offsetting the 7lb.
The race set up looks hugely interesting as both FLYING GENIUS and Just Not Listening To Me (9) diced for the early lead last time before the latter relented and sat in the box seat behind the selection.
Thus from stalls 2 & 1 there could be a bit of 'cat and mouse' between Moreira and Purton for the early lead, but I'd suggest chances are Purton will try to make all, although I wouldn’t be concerned if he elects to take a sit.
The selection stays on the same mark today, which looks more than fair, and in a race where he has drawn low after a few high draws, and with Purton now in the saddle for the first time, I suspect the son of All To Hard will go from the front and be very tough to run down.
Remainder of the Card:
Race 1 is The Class 5 Silvermine Bay Handicap (12.15pm), over 6 furlongs
Absolucool (1) and Chunghwa Jingshen (2) are both dropping down to Class 5 company for the first time. Neither have shown much to date, but both are lightly raced and any market support should be noted.
I’m keen on the chances of AURORA SPEED from the John Size yard. He dropped down to Class 5 company for the first time when 2nd over 5 furlongs at Happy Valley last time, which was a very solid effort given he was hampered on no less than three occasions and featured strongly in the stewards report.
The winner of the race then came out and was only beaten a head in a Class 4, and although going onto the dirt for the first time, (rarely a problem for the Size runners), and with the in form Joao Moreira on top, the selection looks the obvious play.
Race 2 is The Class 4 Kiu Tsui Handicap (12.45pm), over 6 furlongs
Handsome Rebel (1) drops down to Class 4 company for the first time and given he was placed two runs back at Class 3 level, he looks major player. Gracious Ryder was a winner four back at this level, but is on a 9lb higher mark
I’m going to take a proper swing with GOUTEN OF GARO in this. He’s been well held his last four runs but was a winner over 5 furlongs at Happy Valley in November. He looks the likely leader here, which can be favourable on the dirt, and this will be his first run on the dirt for 18 months.
The selection goes from the bottom of the weights, plus has a 3lb claim for Jack Wong, and the David Farraris 6yo is likely to make a bold bid for victory from the front, and at good odds.
Race 3 is The Class 5 Tung Wan Handicap (1.15pm), over the mile (1650m)
Not the strongest of Class 5 contests and I thought the class dropper, GOOD FIT, could be the way to play this one.
He’s a well-exposed type but has won eight times with his last four wins coming at a level above this. His last win (just over a year ago), was over course & distance and when the claim for Jack Wong is taken into account, he goes off a mark 20lb lower today, needless to say he looks dangerously handicapped.
He may need a bit of luck as he is usually ridden cold, but from the draw in 4, if the selection can navigate a clear round, he should take plenty of holding out off this mark.
Race 7 is The Class 3 Hap Mun Bay Handicap (3.15pm), over 9 furlongs
RIGHTEOUS DOCTRINE was an impressive winner over course & distance last time when he had no less than six of these in behind. The runner up that day, Red Elysees, is 4lb better off today, and you would think he’d be a chance of turning around a short margin defeat.
But the selection was slow out of the stalls and although given a cool paint hugging ride by Moreira, the run should be marked up. It was the first local win for the former French trained runner (known as Infernal Majesty) but it was also the first time he had been over the 9 furlongs this campaign and the step up in trip was exactly what he was looking for.
They are likely to ride the selection quietly again, but provided he jumps cleanly he may sit closer to the speed and with only a 5lb hike up the handicap, the Michael Chang 5yo should go close to making in back to back victories.
Race 8 is The Class 2 Cheung Sha Handicap (3.50pm), over the mile (1650m)
The feature is a very decent looking contest to close out proceedings and looks open on paper.
Despite having to run off a career high mark, I thought the John Moore BUDDIES was the one to side with here. He’s a horse we have flagged up a few times with a bit of success, and the son of So You Think rarely runs a bad one.
The selection has drawn low in gate 3 today and looks the likely leader, which is ideal. At his last three wins he has led in two of those and sat second in the other, whilst those three victories came from stalls 2, 1 and 1, I’m sure you can see where I’m going with that?
He returns to the dirt having been 2nd from a wide draw last time on turf, but three of his four careers wins have been on the dirt and in a race that should set up ideally for him, I’m hoping BUDDIES can provide Joao Moreira with yet another winner in his quest for this years title.
