Grooms during COVID19
5 years 3 months ago
Question : Are the grooms registered and do they contribute to the UIF.
Government has released the names of businesses who have been paid out as per the COVID19 TERS Relief scheme.
There are a number of Horseracing stables who appear on this list.
Did the grooms qualify for this or did the trainers apply on behalf of assistants and admin staff only?

I'm pretty sure all trainers are paying UIF, I know the labour department visited all cape trainers last year and they weren't messing around, I think they also visited the trainers up country.

By law any employee that works more than 24 hours in a month must pay UIF which the employer must hand over.
Also note that employers must also have WCA, Letter of Good Standing.
In the event of injury or death during working you will be compensated. I seen on the Mike de Kock website an employee recently got injured on his head and rushed to Sunninghill hospital last month. He was covered as per the website.

If grooms indeed qualify for this benefit, how wise is it to use the grooms situation as a means to convince govt to the lift the ban. Govt will merely refer you to the relief scheme.
