2 venue racing

Hoping that racing gets the go ahead next week.
In the event of this happening I think the powers that control racing in kzn should consider racing at scotsville and greyville on the same day.
Scotsville meeting can start at 10 and finish at 1 and greyville start at 3 and finish at 6. This will allow for ample time for trainers and jockeys to move from one track to the other.
This set up will allow all stables to get involved and earn some keep to at least cover some serious losses.
I'm sure it can be done.....

They can’t afford one set of stakes, how will they pay 2?

Same way Pravin Gordhan expects SAA to not be liquidated or wound down without more money or the unions expect staff to be paid 49% of salaries for the next 2 months without more money...  :(

Just had a message saying that there is only one TV van. So unless they spent Millions it wouldn`t be possible

This idea would never come to fruition, but at least it is out of the box thinking to stimulate turnover, which is what is seemingly lacking of late.
What about just having double header meetings Tuesday to Saturday. Turf and Grey. Fairview and Kenilworth. Scottsville and Vaal. Grey Poly and Turf. Etc.

Okay..if the nominations are to go by for greyville for 1 June then it shows that the stables are really hungry for racing.
A lot of them will not get in and then they have try again and again to get in.
With 2 race venues...scotsville will allow for bigger fields thus giving trainers an opportunity to get their horses to run....greyville has a field restriction...makes it worse for the local trainers as the visitors have been here for sometime and they will want to get into the action to recoup a lot of their travelling and stabling costs.
Bob I understand they have only one van but when it comes to cricket it seems like everything is available for an outside broadcast.

I'm probably just too old and stupid to understand the 'big picture' but this is how matters might pan out :

1.) Racing re-starts with full fields

2.) Betting shops cannot open so its online betting only. I would be interested if an expert insider could tell me just what % of betting is 'betting shop walk in' or racecourse based; both of which are initially excluded. To say nothing of the fact that a significant % of punters don't currently have money for food let alone betting.......

3.) Initial results may well be a train smash for form studiers due to big fields and lack of 'racing fitness'.

4.) Owners are already guaranteed a paltry reward. Only about 4/5 runners from each field will actually earn. The return will be so low only the winner and second will even cover a month or two of keep. The remainder will just have their misery magnified by the additional cost incurred by actually running a horse (eg shoes etc).

5.) Present estimates suggest we will exhaust the Oppenheimer lifeline after about six months in total. R20 million of the R100 million has already been drawn. Unless there is a further substantial capital injection the sport effectively runs out of money.

6.) Business rescue is already requesting more time so don't expect anything to be resolved soon.

7.) The key to the whole survival issue is turnover. I battle to see where this income stream will be coming from. I don't interact with a lot of owners but every one that I have actually talked to is in the process of getting out. And not because of the mess that the industry is in but rather because their own circumstances have deteriorated so sharply in the last few months.

Dear Garrick

You're correct on at least one score....you're probably getting too old !!!! The fact remains that racing has to restart somewhere - and as soon as possible. Of course initial turnover will be low, stakes small and form unpredictable, but racing cannot and will not just lie down and die ! Mary Slack has been magnificent in her dedication to the country in general and racing in particular; lots of the personnel who contributed to racing's parlous state prior to lockdown have been removed; we have the opportunity to restart it in whatever guise it may assume with people who have racing's best interest at heart. Let's cut the negative bullshit, give it our wholehearted support and resuscitate the wonderful game !!!!

Kind regards
Your old mate Cliff
