Gav has won punters so many races, I'm certain this would've been perhaps an error in judgement if anything.

I can never understand this.
I see jocks time and again just not riding out a horse to the line, even with the horse being in contention. There is just no animation at all and then you see more animated jocks fly past them. I know this because I am a place punter. Horses get beat into 4th or 5th because they just don't ride the horse to the line.
Why did they single out Gav here? There are tons of these examples taking place frequently. I have the losing bets to prove it

I, too, am a place/sw supporter...There are quite a few small stables out there, that don't have the support or runners to win a race, and use places/swingers/trifectas and quartets to satisfy their owners...a 50/1 roving banker in a quartet can go a way to supporting your debts of keeping a pet/plodder etc...the trainer has to support his patrons...
and that is why I also feel aggrieved when a horse is not ridden out past the post...especially when all that was required was rhythm...not even the 13th strike of a pool noodle...
typically by the thoses who don't rely on the small, also ran stakes...
however, there are also those who want to save the horse if it cannot obviously win...

If this rule was applied strictly we would mostly only have grooms to ride.
In PE, by the 400m mark you already know your fate... it is easy to spot if your horse is a trier or not. Same applies to Cape Town.

Disgusting ride. 3rd place horse that sat last for those wondering. Forget not moving a muscle, the horse sat last but still was taken into the ruck where there's no space when clearly could've been taken out wide for it's run, which seemed where the horse was heading on its own at the top of the straight.
