The National Horseracing Authority confirms that at an Inquiry held in Port Elizabeth on Thursday, 20 August 2020, Mr Gavin Venter, a licenced Stable Employee and Colour Holder was charged with contraventions of Rules 72.1.25 and 72.1.42.

The specifics of the charges being:-

That on Friday, 31 July 2020, he physically assaulted another Jockey in the weighing room area, following an objection hearing after the running of Race 9 at Fairview Racecourse and in doing so, conducted himself in an improper manner on racecourse property.

That during the Objection hearing following the running of Race 9 at Fairview Racecourse, he directed verbal threats towards a Jockey in the Stipendiary Stewards Boardroom and conducted himself in an improper, disrespectful and abusive manner during a hearing under the Rules of Racing.

Mr Venter pleaded guilty to both charges.

The Inquiry Board after carefully considering the evidence and all mitigating and aggravating factors, found Mr Venter guilty on both charges.

Before determining a suitable penalty regarding both charges, the Inquiry Board considered that the conduct of Mr Venter was sufficiently serious enough to attract the strongest censure, so as to serve as both a penalty and a possible deterrent to others in the industry.

Insofar as the contravention of Rule 72.1.25 was concerned, a penalty of a fine of R30 000 was imposed.

In relation to the contravention of Rule 72.1.42 was concerned, a penalty of a fine of R15 000 was imposed.

Mr Venter was afforded the Right of Appeal against the penalties handed down by the Inquiry Board.

So the moral of the story is,you can hold a lofty position as LW once did,and assault a member of the public and get away with a reprimand, but just don't klap a jockey.:( :(

Well if the MOD's decide to try and get some compensation back from the earlier brigade that was running our racing then R45 000 is going to look like peanuts compared to what old Larry might have to pay back.

why has Andrew Fortune been maliciously targeted by Moodley and Co.

Seems like a vendetta against certain people by Moodley and co.

Where is the consistency?

The trainer, Anil Maharaj, who gave the late Gift Funeka the ride on His Nibs in the July got warned off for assaulting, an official at Greyville racecourse years back.

Funeka was the first black jockey to ride in the July. His Nibs won his maiden in Bloemfontein as a 5yo and won the Greyville 1900 at any odds before running in the July.

There are a few incidents that come to mind and it's not good to speak ill of the departed but there was the case of the late Bertie Hayden and the late Cyril Naidoo at the Ashburton Training Centre. Apparently Hayden wasn't too
pleased with Naidoo training his horses to run anti-clockwise, not that he , Naidoo had the Cape Guineas or the Met in his sights but probably because Clairwood Park was still part of the silverware around that time.
Hayden was not warned off.

The Cape racegoers will know more about the incident involving the trainer Stephen Page and another trainer who is now late, I think it was Carl Burger. Stephen Page was assaulted and I don't remember the outcome of that case.

Then there was a flamboyant maroon suit clad RA official who thought he was a pro boxer. He attacked a member of the public on course at a big race day meeting at Turffontein. I think he said he was provoked but all he got was a slap on the wrist.

There has to be more...………………………..

I can't recall the course but many years ago a Racing Journalist(a very entertaining guy who has since left the industry) who loved a drink or five shot his gun off outside because some guys had started fighting and he thought that would be the best way to stop the ruckus - was in the 80's - I was told this by several racing jouros so I think it was true - At around that same time (70's-80's) at a sale or race meeting a very prominent owner who was pissed to the hills went to his Merc or Jag and found he could not get into the car as he had lost his keys - I think then asked someone to break the window and he hot-wired the car and drove home only to find out that it was a similar Coloured car and make to his to his but belonged to another owner - The things that went on in the owners and trainers then was like a time capsule back to Roman Days
