Harness racing: attracted huge support on a trial evening at Kempton
WILLIAM HILL have revealed their first step into British harness racing.
In conjunction with the British Harness Racing Club (BHRC), the bookmaking giant will sponsor the William Hill British Pacing Championship, with a prize fund of £25,000 and due to be broadcast in betting shops in Britain and Ireland and on At The Races.
Lord David Lipsey, president of the BHRC, said: “This is a great day for harness racing, and we're delighted to work with William Hill in our most exciting event to date.
“We're enthused about the format and are thrilled to see the sport achieving main-stream recognition. Racing fans and punters alike, hold on to your hats! You are about to be blown away.”
The championship will be run at Wolverhampton next month.
Three qualifying contests, each for 12 runners, will take place with heats on September 12, 19, and 20. The first four home will qualify. The £12,000-to-the-winner final will be held on September 26.
David Hood, spokesman for William Hill, said: “We're delighted to take our first step into harness racing, and particularly to work with the British Harness Racing Club who are an establishment equally as enthused and passionate about their sport as we are.
“Harness racing continues to grow in popularity and the sport has made giant strides to achieve the confidence of race-goers and punters alike with a professional outlook and increased levels of integrity.
“We feel that the series will be tremendously well-received and are proud to become the sport's biggest sponsor with our first event. ”
