NEWLY APPOINTED NATIONAL BOARD DIRECTOR
The NHA confirms that due to Adv S M Lebala SC sadly passing away on 15 August 2020, a vacancy for an independent person in terms of clause 15.1.2 of the NHA’s Constitution became available on the National Board. In terms of Chapter 4 of the Constitution of The National Horseracing Authority the Nominations Committee, consisting of past chairmen Adv Altus Joubert SC, Mr Andrew O’Connor, Mr Larry Nestadt and Mr Jonathan Witts-Hewinson has appointed Adv Christiaan Frederik van der Merwe SC to the National Board of Directors of the NHA to fill the vacancy.
Adv Van der Merwe SC is a leading practising senior counsel at the Johannesburg Society of Advocates, is an elected member of the Bar Council and serves as chairman of the Treasury Committee and of the Professional and Fees Committee. Adv Van der Merwe SC has been a member of the Johannesburg Bar since 1997. He was appointed as senior counsel in 2016.
Prior to being called to the Bar, Adv Van der Merwe SC served as assistant to the chairman of the National Peace Secretariat (1994) and as registrar to His Lordship Mr Justice Mynhardt (1994). Thereafter he served his articles of clerkship at Hofmeyr Van Der Merwe Inc (1995, 1996).
Adv Van der Merwe SC specialises in property and administrative law, with emphasis on property development, town planning, sectional titles, land claims, expropriation, mineral law, property valuation, environmental law and litigation relating to provincial and local governance.
The National Horseracing Authority of Southern Africa welcomes Adv Van der Merwe SC to the National Board.
