SA Racing Memorabilia

Hi Guys,

While most of us are sick for the game (gambling part), does anyone actually collect pieces of racing memorabilia?

It can be anything - caps, paintings, pictures, pretty much anything with a story to tell.

I bought Tommy Morgan's wooden book maker case at an auction a few years ago - I am too young to know him, but as a young lad, I recall my grandfather betting with him on track with a few funny stories here and there. When it went on auction, I had to have it. This wooden case is BLOODY heavy and solid - it even has somewhat of a secret compartment inside, presuming thats where all the cash was stored? :woohoo:

I always enjoy the racing stories from yesteryear and even more so, memorabilia that has a tale linked to it. If you guys have anything, please do share.

The most gruesome piece I ever laid eyes on was a hoof turned into an ashtray - It had a hallmarked silver plaque with the horse's name on it - He won some ridiculous amount of races - something like 80 wins - It was a Victorian era piece that I saw in an antique shop - I own a silver cigarette case given to the Jockey by the owner of the Benoni Hotel for winning the July Handicap and a pair of Victorian era binoculars with a hallmark from Longchanp and somewhere glasses given away at the now closed Newmarket Racetrack Night meetings - The guy with an awesome collection is Ettiene Louw formerly of the Beeld Newspaper -

Newmarket Race course JHB. Ran this promotion to get people to come night racing back in the day, a different glass was issued over a period of meetings until your set of 6 was complete

Nothing fancy, loved getting the stuff from Barry Irwin when AK won the Kentucky derby 🐎

Unfortunately some donut opened the card set!

My dad has a very well kept racecard for the race meeting scheduled the day of the Henneman air disaster. Last time that some great names were found in a racecard.
