PHUMELELA MEDIA RELEASE

SUBJECT: Vaal-bound float stuck in traffic

DATE: Thursday 5 November 2020

RELEASED BY: Phumelela Gaming

The first float from Randjesfontein to Vaal Racecourse today was delayed, resulting in five horses having to be withdrawn from Races 1 and 2.

The R59 highway was closed to traffic this morning due to a serious accident and Phumelela float drivers were notified to take an alternate route to Vaal Racecourse. For unknown reasons, the driver of the float in question did not take the alternate route and continued along the R59 highway.

The float duly got stuck in the traffic jam arising from the temporary road closure and the driver then attempted to make a U-turn. This resulted in the float getting stuck on a slight embankment, making it impossible to unload the horses. The float eventually had to be towed off the embankment and then resumed its journey to the Vaal.

Phumelela will open a full inquiry into the incident and the driver’s decision not to heed the instruction to take an alternate route.

Phumelela sincerely regrets the inconvenience caused to the connections of the horses scratched as a result of the delay.
