PRESS RELEASE

HANDICAPPING RATINGS UPDATE

• World Sports Betting Gauteng Summer Cup (Handicap) Grade 1)
SUMMER PUDDING has had her merit rating raised from 119 to 129 after she made it nine wins from nine starts with an emphatic victory in the Grade 1 World Sports Betting Summer Cup (handicap) over 2000m on the Turffontein standside track on Saturday 28 November.

The Handicappers were of the view that DANCE CLASS was highly unlikely to have run below her mark by finishing fourth in a race of this calibre and elected to use her as the line horse, which leaves her rating unchanged on 96.

The winner aside, the only other increase was for runner-up RUNNING BRAVE, who was raised from 114 to 119, but there were ratings drops for three runners.

TIERRA DEL FUEGO is down from 120 to 118, VICTORIA PAIGE drops from 105 to 103 and lastly, HERO’S HONOUR was cut from 110 to 107.

• World Sports Betting Dingaans (Grade 2)
CATCH TWENTY TWO has had his rating raised from 104 to 116 following his success in the Grade 2 World Sports Betting Dingaans for three-year-olds over 1600m at Turffontein on Saturday. 5th placed WINTER STORIES was deemed to make for the best line horse, which leaves him unchanged on a mark of 106.

There were also increases for all of the placed horses. Runner-up MK’S PRIDE was raised from 109 to 112, 3rd placed BINGWA goes from 96 to 111, and 4th finisher AL MUTHANA was picked up from 94 to 105.

This seven point increase is due in part to the fact that WINTER SMOKE was 0.5 kg under sufferance at the weights, and furthermore that she carried 0.5 kg overweight.

It was 4th placed LINEAR that the Handicappers deemed to make for the best line horse, which leaves her unchanged on a rating of 100, but runner-up GALLIC PRINCESS was raised from 110 to 114, while 3rd placed DOUBLE ‘O’ EIGHT goes up from 96 to 99. Not sure about the sums - to me if Dance Class ran to her mark of 98, it means that Summer Pudding ran to around 124 and Running Brave runs to her mark of 114 which seems reasonable to me; if Summer Pudding ran to 129, it means that DC ran to 103, but then Running Brave ran to 119 - which does not seem likely for a 5 yr old mare to improve 5 pounds, so for me:

Summer Pudding - 124 (was 119)
Running Brave - 114 (was 114)
Tree Tumbo - 104 (was 109) .... may be better over shorter
Dance Class - 98 (was 98)

In the Ipi Tombe, using Shivers as the line horse at 103, does mean that Kayla's Champ (beaten 1.5 lengths) ran close to 100 .... will watch that one closely in a handicap next time

Pardon my ignorance but this is what I see........

Mount Pleasant.......3 x winner of about R 200,000- in stakes.
Old race figure system...C Division.
Now rated.......127

Summer Pudding.....9x winner of about R 2,000,000- in stakes in Gr 1.
Horse of the year and all that.......
Old race figure system........A Division.
Now rated......129.

Mount Pleasant is now facing a mountainous task to have his rating reduced if he doesn't shape up in the Classics.

the handicappers have painted themselves into a corner.. every few years they will have to do their 6 or 20 point penalty scenorio to fix the mashup in the lower levels.

eventually we gonna have 150 and 160 rated horses.

When listening to Mike De Kock summing up this horse he said " rated 119 but could be a 129 horse " and a week later he was proven correct. he really is different class.

Dance Class my line horse.

Mount Pleasant is definitely atleast a 125. It could have been the distance but I think its rather the softer going that slowed him down.

I agree with you- very tricky race to rate as the going appeared to affect quite a few, and Running Brave now looks too high.
They also smacked my ultra consistent 6yo mare Seeking Wisdom 4 lb in the Algoa, which was run at a false pace early, and she was very enterprisingly ridden. I would have used her as the line horse, not Rock Aloe as he got going too late off that pace.

I agree with you Peter - Running Brave should be the line horse as she ran her usual game race but is definitely not improving at this stage of her career. Admittedly a difficult race to rate as just about all of the balance ran way below best in the prevailing going.
