Appointment of Chief Veterinary Surgeon
The National Horseracing Authority (NHA) has pleasure in announcing the appointment of its Chief Veterinary Surgeon, Dr Thiago Luz.
Dr Luz arrived in South Africa from Brazil in the middle of December 2020 and is to be based in Johannesburg, where he will head up the Veterinary Department.
With horse welfare, traceability of horses during and following their racing careers and ensuring strict compliance with best international veterinary regulatory practices being of critical importance, the appointment of an internationally experienced Regulatory Veterinary Surgeon will further these ideals.
Dr Luz has worked in countries that include Brazil, England and Qatar and will be a member of various international Veterinary Regulatory Committees as the NHA representative.
The NHA welcomes Dr Luz and his family to South Africa and looks forward to his future contribution to the Horseracing Industry.
Enquiries:
A D Hyde
Racing Control Executive

South African vets not good enough?
If I could make a suggestion to Dr. Luz to ask Hyde why the "critically important" matter of horse rehoming and tracability evokes the following response from the NHA website:
RETIREMENT & REHOMING
New retirement and rehoming procedures and forms are being processed and will be published as soon as possible. Any queries must be directed to the Chief Veterinarian of the NHA.
And has done so for the last 18 months.....
I hope Thiago owns a clown suit. He will need one to fit in there

No sane equine vet based in SA will take a job with them. Why work for R10000 0000 000 a month when you can join your colleagues and continue to invoice owners williy nilly for all and sundry and earn far more.

We recently had our horse gelded and I took the liberty to add this footnote to the invoice
"During this Covid outbreak do Vets have to wear masks, or are they still using the traditional balaclava"?
