Aah ,old Smiley, years ago my mates and I used to frequent the tote in Pretoria, think it might have been Bosman street or the like,Jeff the Jewish guy, cant remember his surname was the Bookie,,Smiley at the time was exiled from commentating and used to sit at our table and commentate live as the race was run.He was normally spot on,especially in a close finish. He was an enigma at our table as he didn't consume alcohol but the more pissed we got the more he would regale us with his exploits on the soccer field,I know he was a very good player and used to tell us that his brother Zain/Zane(I think Zane/Zain played for Sundowns) was half the player that he was .
Anyway good old times.
P.S We used to club in and Smiley used to play a PA with the sure thing bankers with the graft that he had,I don't think we ever caught the PA with his selections,

Hi Felix
Remember old Bosman St and Smiley.
You probably talking about Jeff Nowitz.
Eerenstien (Hans and Louis) Hendrick Prinsloo, johnny Stark, Vish, Mr Sack, etc etc
I sold my cubicle to Marlon Aaronstam
Plenty fun time and stories these days and a great atmosphere.

I would add as part of many stories Smiley had his own unique style.
If lets say 4 favs had one on the trot he would add to his commentary, along the lines "the bookies must be running for cover"
Mr Prinsloo had a short fuse and was not keen on Smileys elaborate last furlong chirps.
He would often throw his telephone (i mean a real monster table version) against the wall.
He would scream "i will kill that Moosa "
All in good jest.😢
Smiley never actually got what he deserved for his contribution to "soccer"

Yes, Zane Moosa played for Sundowns...did tricks with the ball during the match to get the crowd going...
